Jack Klugman: Odd Couple star dies aged 90
Stage and Screen Actor Jack Klugman died in his home at Woodland Hills in Los Angeles on 24 Dec 2012, age 90.
Klugman was best known for his role has 'Oscar Madison' in Neil Simon's 'The Odd Couple,' a character he first played on Broadway when he assumed the role on 08 Nov 1965. He revived the role of 'Oscar Madison' when he starred alongside Tony Randall in the succesful TV series that ran from 1970 - 1975, for which he won two Emmy Awards.
Klugman's other Broadway credits include playing 'Herbie' in the Broadway premiere of the musical 'Gypsy,' for which he was nominated for a Tony Award.
Klugman was also known to millions for his role has the coroner "Dr. R. Quincy" in the TV series "Quincy M.E." for which he was nominated for four Emmy Awards. Other TV credits include his Emmy nominated role has "Joe Larch" in "The Defenders," "Around the World in 80 Days," "You Again?" and "Insight." His movies include "Goodbye, Columbus" for which he was nominated for a Bafta Award, "12 Angry Men" and "Cry Terror!"
Born in Philadelphia on 27 Apr 1922, Klugman graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology 1948. He served in the USA Army during WWII, and when the war ended he moved to New York to pursue a career in acting. He married Brett Somers in 1953 and the couple has two sons, Adam and David. Klugman and Summers legally separated in 1974, though they never divorced. In 1988 Klugman began living with Peggy Crosby, and the couple married in 2008 following the death of Brett Somers in 2007.
His son Adam said the actor has been in declining health for the last year. Klugman had withdrawn from a production of 'Twelve Angry Men' at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, N.J., in March this year for undisclosed health reasons.
Jack Klugman is survived by his two sons Adam and David, his wife Peggy and two grandchildren.
