Inherit The Wind: previews from 19 Mar 2007


Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee's courtroom drama Inherit the Wind, is to open at Broadway' Lyceum Theatre on 12 Apr 2007, following prevuews from 19 Mar 2007, for a 12 week limited engagemen.

The drama will co-star Christopher Plummer (Henry Drummond) and Brian Dennehy (Matthew Harrison Brady) and be ditected by Doug Hughes, who received critical acclaim for his direction of John Patrick Shanley's Doubt.

Christopher Plummer was last on Broadway when he played the title role in King Lear (Revival 2004). His many Broadway credits include Barrymore (1997), No Man's Land (Revival 1994) and Macbeth (1988) to name a few. He made his Broadway debut in The Starcross Story (1954).

Brian Dennehy last appeared on Broadway in Long Day's Journey Into Night (Revival 2003), his other Broadway credits include Death of a Salesman (Revival 1999) and Translations (1995) in which he made his Broadway debut.

Costume and Set design for the drama will be by Santo Loquasto

Additional cast and creative team will be announced at a later date.

Inherit the Wind is based on the famous 'Monkey Trial', a real-life case in 1925. Teacher B.T. Cates is arrested for teaching Darwin's theories. Famous lawyer Henry Drummond defends him; fundamentalist politician Matthew Brady prosecutes.

The play is being produced on Broadway by Boyett Ostar Productions and the Shubert Organization.

Inherit the Wind was first produced on Broadway in 1955 and ran for two years. It was directed by Herman Shumlin and starred Paul Muni as Henry Drummond and Ed Begley as Matthew Harrison Brady. It was revived for a short lived run in 1996, with direction by John Tillinger and the two antagonists played by George C. Scott as Henry Drummond and Charles Durning as Matthew Harrison Brady.
