Gypsy, starring Patti LuPone to play at New York City Center

A full staged production of Gypsy, starring Patti LuPone as Mama Rose, and directed by librettist Arthur Laurents, will be the first offering of New York City Centers new Encores! Summer Stars series.

The musical will begin previews on 9 Jul 2007, with a planned opening scheduled for 12 Jul, and will run through to 29 Jul 2007, at New York City Center.

LuPone played Mama Rose to critical acclaim in a concert production of Gypsy at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago that ran from 11 - 13 Aug 2006.

LuPone was last seen on Broadway playing Mrs. Lovett in 'Sweeney Todd' (2005 revival) for which she was nominated for a Tony Award. LuPone won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performace as Eva Peron in 'Evita' (1979).

Further casting and the production's creative team have still to be announced.

Gypsy is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee and tells the story of Mama Rose, the fiercely ambitious show business mother who pushes her two daughters to stardom, no matter the personal cost.

Gypsy has book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1959 with Ethel Merman starring as Mama Rose. Subsequent Broadway revivals have seen Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly and Bernadette Peters playing the starring role. The musical features the songs 'Some People,' 'Small World,' Everything's Coming Up Roses,' and 'Roses Turn'.
