Farragut North to star Tony Award winner John Gallagher, Jr.

Tony Award winner John Gallagher, Jr. is to star in the Atlantic Theater Company's world premiere of Beau Willimon's darma Farragut North, directed by Doug Hughes, opening at the Atlantic's Linda Gross Theater on 12 Nov 2008, following previews from 22 Oct, and playing through to 29 Nov 2008.

Gallagher rose to fame when he originated the role of 'Moritz' in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. He made his Broadway debut as 'Jason' in the Manhattan Theatre Club's production of David Lindsay-Abaire' 'Rabbit Hole' (2006). Earlier this year Gallagher starred as 'Kevin' in the Atlantic's production of 'Port Authority.'

Further casting for the production is still to be announced.

Stephen (John Gallagher, Jr.) is a wunderkind press secretary who has built a career that men twice his age would envy. During a tight presidential primary race, however, Stephen's meteoric rise falls prey to the backroom politics of more seasoned operatives, and his one night stand with a teenage staffer proves to be more complicated than casual.

Farragut North is a classic tale of hubris set against a contemporary landscape - about the lust for power and the costs one will endure to acheive it.

The play is titled after Farragut North, a Washington Metro station in Washington, D.C that is located in the center of the lobbyist district.

Beau Willimon (playwright) is no stranger to political shenanigan's, having worked for Dean's 2004 presidential race, Chuck Schumer's 1998 U.S. Senate race, Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate race, and Bill Bradley's 2000 presidential bid.

Farragut North is said to be "loosely based on Howard Dean's 2004 campaign for the White House."

Doug Hughes' Broadway credits include 'Doubt' (2005) for which he was awarded a Tony Award for Best director, he was nominated for a Tony for his helmship of 'Frozen' (2004) and 'Inherit the Wind' (2007). He was last represented on Broadway in Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Theresa Rebeck's 'Mauritius' (2007).

Earlier this year rumours suggested that Farragut North would be produced on Broadway by Mike Nichols and that Jake Gyllenhaal would star as Stephen. These rumours have so far proved to be unfounded.
