Drama Desk Awards 2007-2008 nominations announced


Nominations for the 53rd Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced on Mon 28 Apr 2008 at The New York Friars Club by theater notables Bebe Neuwirth and Len Cariou .

The annual awards honor excellence in theater for Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway during the season. Leading the slate of nominees is 'A Catered Affair' which received 12 nominations, followed by Adding Machine with nine nominations, and South Pacific and Young Frankenstein with 8 nominations each.

'In the Heights,' which received multiple Drama Desk nominations last season for its Off-Broadway run, was "considered only for new elements in the current Broadway production." 'Glory Days' did not begin previews prior to this season's Drama Desk cut-off date, but the musical will be eligible for nominations next season.

The winners of the Drama Desk Awards will be announced at the Awards ceremony to be held on the 18 May 2008 at the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. The ceremony will be hosted by the cast of '[title of show].'

Each year, the Drama Desk votes special awards to recognize excellence and significant contributions to the theater. For 2007/2008, these awards are presented:

  • Edward Albee "whose provocative plays, including this season's 'Peter and Jerry,' enrich the American theater."
  • James Earl Jones, a "commanding force on the stage for nearly half a century."
  • 59E59 Theaters, whose "imaginative curatorial vision has created a stimulating environment to nurture a diverse range of artists."
  • Playwrights Horizons for "ongoing support to generations of theater artists and undiminished commitment to producing new work."

The Drama Desk was founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics� organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition between Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions.

The 2008 Drama Desk nominators included chairperson Barbara Siegel (chairperson,) Dan Bacalzo, Robert Cashill, Celia Ipiotis, Gerard Raymond and Richard Ridge.
