David Byrne's 'Here Lies Love' to open on Broadway this summer
The musical premiered off Broadway in 2013.
Here lies Broadway! Here Lies Love, the acclaimed disco pop musical by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, is set to premiere on Broadway this summer. Performances begin June 17 ahead of a July 20 opening night.
Here Lies Love is based on the true story of Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos and her fall from power amid her country's People Power Revolution. Of its Off-Broadway premiere in 2013 at The Public Theater, The New York Times raved, "'Here Lies Love' is rich with candied melodies that stick to the inner ear and beats that act like cattle prods. This is music created to sweep you into unthinking acquiescence, as history is said to do."
In 2013, Here Lies Love was performed in an immersive style. The actors performed among the audience, and the audience was encouraged to participate in the movement as though at a dance club. This staging will be replicated for Broadway; the Broadway Theatre, where Here Lies Love will play, will be remodeled to resemble a dance club environment, where audiences will stand and move with the performers.
Byrne, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee formerly of the Talking Heads, created the concept, music, and lyrics for Here Lies Love, with music also by big beat musician Fatboy Slim, and additional music by Tom Gandey and J Pardo.
Directing is Tony Award winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge! The Musical) and choreography is by Annie-B Parson. In addition to Here Lies Love off Broadway, Byrne, Timbers, and Parson previously collaborated on American Utopia, Byrne's special Tony Award-winning theatrical concert that had two acclaimed Broadway runs in New York.
The creative team for Here Lies Love on Broadway also includes set designer David Korins, costume designer Clint Ramos, lighting designer Justin Townsend, sound designers M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer, and projection designer Peter Nigrini.
