## Who is in the *Here Lies Love* Broadway cast?

Arielle Jacobs, known for starring in [*Aladdin*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/105-disneys-aladdin-tickets) and *In the Heights*, will star as Imelda Marcos. Tony Award nominee Ruthie Ann Miles, who now stars in [*Sweeney Todd*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26216-sweeney-todd-on-broadway-tickets) on Broadway, played the role off Broadway.

Jacobs joins previously announced cast members Jose Llana as Ferdinand Marcos, Conrad Ricamora as anti-Marcos revolution leader Ninoy Aquino, and [Lea Salonga](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/lea-salonga), who will guest star for a limited five-week engagement as Aurora Aquino beginning July 11.

## What is *Here Lies Love* about?

The Broadway Theatre becomes a club for *Here Lies Love* on Broadway, where the audiences get to stand and dance among the performers as they act out the story of Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines, through dance music. The musical follows Marcos from her younger days, when she aspired to be in politics, to the height of her power alongside her husband Ferdinand, to the later years when the tide shifted and her once-closest friends led the calls for her removal during the People Power Revolution of 1986.

*Here Lies Love* was an instant hit upon its Off-Broadway premiere at The Public Theater in 2013. Following rave reviews, the show returned for an encore run at the Public in 2014 but hasn't returned to New York since. But at long last, its highly anticipated Broadway premiere arrives, with the original creative team reuniting: songwriters David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, Tony Award-winning director Alex Timbers, and choreographer Annie-B Parson.

Byrne, Parson, and Timbers previously collaborated on Byrne's Tony-winning theatrical concert *American Utopia*, which played two acclaimed Broadway runs in 2019 and 2021. He previously wrote music for *Everyday Rapture* and *Twyla Tharp Dance* on Broadway, but he's best known as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee as the former frontman for the Talking Heads.

## Who is Fatboy Slim?

Fatboy Slim makes his Broadway debut with *Here Lies Love* in New York, building on a decades-long musical career in which he popularized the big beat genre and collaborated with dozens of artists. One of those, beginning in 2008, was Byrne, as part of the Brighton Port Authority, a musical project Slim co-founded.

*Here Lies Love* first appeared off Broadway in 2013, with direction by Alex Timbers and choreography by Annie-B Parson, who return for the Broadway run. The cast included Tony Award winner Ruthie Ann Miles as Imelda, Jose Llana as her husband Ferdinand, and Conrad Ricamora as opposition leader Ninoy Aquino; the latter two also return for Broadway. The limited-run production at The Public Theater won five Lucille Lortel Awards, three Drama Desk Awards, and an Obie Award, and the show subsequently returned for an encore run in 2014.

Byrne has been working on the musical since the early 2000s. He was first inspired by *The Autocrat*, a book by Polish author Ryszard Kapuściński about the fall of a separate Ethiopian regime. To him, the carefully curated personas of powerful world leaders reminded him of theatrical performances.

He later read that Marcos was fond of disco (and was even part of the New York disco scene for a time) and further researched her life. Byrne then combined all these themes into one concept, which became *Here Lies Love* in New York.

## What to watch for

- *Here Lies Love* on Broadway is immersive, with the actors performing among and interacting with the audience. The Broadway Theatre has been converted into a club, where theatregoers get to dance along with the show!
- Timbers, Parson, and Byrne previously collaborated on *American Utopia*.
- Byrne likes disco music, but the Talking Heads was definitely not a disco band. He said *Here Lies Love* "freed him to write songs for other people that he wouldn’t write for himself," according to the Associated Press.

For [*Here Lies Love*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27415-here-lies-love-on-broadway), the storied [Broadway Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/broadway-theatre) has transformed into Club Millennium, a bright, pulsating discotheque sans orchestra seats. A disc jockey (Moses Villarama) pumps up the incoming crowd as energetic ushers, clad in pink jumpsuits, play air traffic control for patrons on the dance floor. A fitting setting for a musical about the rise of a dictatorship, no? 

[David Byrne](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/david-byrne) and Fatboy Slim’s musical, which began as a concept album, chronicles the ascent of Imelda Marcos’s power, fame, and fortune — and subsequent fall. Director Alex Timbers zeros in on Imelda’s lavish spending of ill-gotten money. And its narrative framework hangs on a fun historical fact: Imelda had a mirrored disco ball inside her New York townhouse and was a famously large presence in the city's disco scene. 

The show’s timeline spans from Imelda’s childhood in the 1930s to the People Power Revolution in 1986, telling her rags-to-riches story through disco-pop beats. A local beauty pageant deems Imelda the “Rose of Tacloban,” a title that inspires her to move to Manila, where she meets Congressman Ferdinand Marcos and helps him clinch the presidential election. The rest is a painful history of corruption, repression, and violence.

The immersive musical first bowed off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013 before making waves in London, Australia, and stateside in Seattle. Now, *Here Lies Love* brings the [first all-Filipino cast on Broadway](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/meet-the-all-filipino-here-lies-love-broadway-cast), with a company including Jose Llana (Ferdinand Marcos) and Conrad Ricaroma (Ninoy Aquino), who originated their roles downtown. 

[Arielle Jacobs](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/arielle-jacobs-seizes-the-starring-role-of-imelda-marcos-in-here-lies-love-broadway) glitters as Imelda Marcos with her dulcet vocals and ability to transform from a “young girl from Leyte” to the stony “Steel Butterfly,” as the dictator came to be known. (Costume designer Clint Ramos’s pleated, butterfly-sleeve dresses help the metamorphosis.) Jacobs is disarming in the role.

As Ferdinand, Llana energizes supporters with friendly handshakes, and later, he asserts dominance with a simple glare. Ricamora's Ninoy, as the opposition leader, riles the crowd with his charming confidence and shines with solo numbers like “The Fabulous One.” Another standout is the incomparable [Lea Salonga](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/lea-salonga) as Aurora Aquino. Her number, “Just Ask the Flowers,” is a showstopper. (Salonga will play the role through August 13.)

The show's real star is the glitzy, all-encompassing set by David Korins. As the action unfolds, stage platforms shift, audience members shuffle, and video projections display live-action crowd shots and historical documents on large screens throughout the auditorium. A giant disco ball spins, reflecting light across the space. Annie-B Parson’s electrifying choreography, which includes a Filipino line dance with the audience, furthers the nightclub scene. 

Audience members whose knowledge of Imelda Marcos is limited to the fact that she owned 3,000 pairs of shoes will only leave with a partial understanding of this violent period. The musical has no book, and the punchy songs paint broad strokes of the 60-year history. (The program, given to the stage floor patrons upon exiting the theatre, includes an insert with a more detailed historical timeline that fills in the show’s gaps.)

Still, this rollicking, form-breaking musical party is well worth an RSVP.

The Broadway Theatre is one of only five playhouses situated directly on the street named Broadway. Designed by Eugene De Rosa, the building officially opened on December 25, 1924, as B. S. Moss’s Colony, a premier film house. The building underwent a series of name changes, including to Universal's Colony Theatre, B.S. Moss' Broadway Theatre, and Earl Carroll's Broadway Theatre.

The theatre was used for stage productions and was re-christened simply as the Broadway Theatre on December 30, 1930. The Shubert Organization purchased the property in 1939 and have since completed two renovations in 1956 and 1986. The theatre houses an extremely large stage at 60 feet deep.

The Broadway Theatre, located at 53rd Street and Broadway, is closest to the 50th Street subway stop on the 1 line. The nearest bus stop to the theatre is 7th Ave/W 53rd St. on the M7, M20, and M104 lines.
