Cyrano de Bergerac to star Kevin Kline, Jennifer Garner and Daniel Sunjata



It has now been offcially announced that Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner will star in a new production of Cyrano de Bergerac, Edmond Rostand's 1897 romantic classic, with a translation and adaptation by Anthony Burgess (A Clockwork Orange). Daniel Sunjata will also star.

The play, to be directed by David Leveaux, will play a strictly limited 10-week engagement at the Richard Rodgers Theater, where it will open on 1 Nov 2007, following previews from 12 Oct and run through to 23 Dec 2007.

The soulful poet/philosopher and brilliant swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac, a cadet in the French Army, falls for the beautiful, strong-willed Roxane, but is too ashamed of his large nose to tell her. Instead, when he learns that she loves the handsome Christian de Neuvillette, his dim-witted comrade, he pens poetry and love letters to Roxane on Christian's behalf. After many years, the truth is revealed. Will loveor beauty conquer all?

Kevin Kline (Cyrano) was recently seen on the New York stage when he starred in the Off-Broadway Public Theater's production of 'King Lear'. Kline made his Broadway debut as Vershinin in Checkov's The Three Sisters (1973 revival). He has won two Tony Awards, the first for his role as Bruce Granit in 'On the Twentieth Century' (1978), and the second for his performance as The Pirate King in 'The Pirates of Penzance' (1981 revival). He has also starred in a range of films including A Fish Called Wanda, for which he won an Academy Award.

Jennifer Garner (Roxane) is making her first Broadway debut as a full cast member, she has prvisouly acted as understudy for the roles of Katya and Verochka in 'A Month in the Country' (1995 revival). Garner won the Golden Globe Award during her first of five seasons as Sidney Bristow on TV's 'Alias,' and earned four Emmy Award Nominationsfor that same role. She has also appeared in such films as 'Daredevil', 'Catch Me If You Can', '13 Going On 30', 'Catch & Release' and the upcoming 'The Kingdom'.

Daniel Sunjata (Christian)last appeared on Broadway as Darren Lemming in 'Take Me Out' (2003), for which he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He made his Broadway debut as Valentine in Twelfth Night (1998 revival). Sunjata isurrently starring on television in the new ESPN mini-series 'The Bronx is Burning' and FX's 'Rescue Me.'

David Leveaux's Directional Broadway credits include The Glass Menagerie (2005 revival), Jumpers (2004 revival), Fiddler on the Roof (2004 revival), Nine (2003 revival), Betrayal (2000 revival), The Real Thing (2000 revival), Electra (1998 revival), Anna Christie (1993 revival) and A Moon for the Misbegotten (1984 revival).

Cyrano de Bergerac was last revied on Broadway at the George Gershwin Theatre in 1984. The play was directed by Terry Hands, and starred Derek Jacobi as Cyrano and Sinéad Cusack as Roxanne.
