Cry-Baby is expected on Broadway in Mar 2008

The new musical comedy Cry Baby, based on the John Waters' film of the same name, is expected to arrive on Broadway in Mar 2008, and open in Apr 2008, at a theatre to be announced.

It's Baltimore in 1954. Everyone likes Ike, nobody likes Communism and Wade Cry Baby Walker is the baddest boy in town. He's a rebel with a cause truth, justice and the pursuit of rock 'n' roll and when he falls for a good girl, his square little suburb rocks around the clock.

Cry Babyis to have its world-premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, from 6 Nov - 16 Dec 2007. The musical has book by Mark ODonnell and Thomas Meehan, lyrics and music by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger, and is directed by Mark Brokaw with choreography by Rob Ashford.

Cry Baby is the second John Waters' film to be adapted for the stage as a musical comedy, the first being the 2003 Tony Award winning Best Musical Hairspray

The new musical is being produced on Broadway by Adam Epstein (Hairspray).

No cast has been announced for either the San Diego or Broadway run.

The movie Cry-Baby opened on 6 Apr 1990 and grossed only $8,266,343 by the end of its theatrical run, thus not recouping the estimated $12 million budget. However, thanks to the presence of Johnny Depp, who stars as Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, the film has since proven lucrative on television, video, and DVD.
