Take a ride through a small community with huge feelings: the Vernon Point Neighborhood Association is a passionate bunch, whether squabbling over historically inaccurate porch railings or debating trash can protocol. However, those issues seem miniature when the real neighbor-versus-neighbor battle royale ensues. A newcomer joins the board, and shortly after doing so suggests the unthinkable: installing a stop sign on the corner of the enclave’s prettiest block.

David Lindsay-Abaire is a master of picking at human idiosyncrasies, which are on full, hilarious display in this big comedy about  local drama. "Manhattan Theatre Club has been my artistic home since I was a baby-playwright, so of course I’m thrilled to be back with The Balusters, my newest play about well-intentioned people behaving really badly,” he said in a statement.

He added, “The only thing more exciting than having a new show on Broadway? Having it helmed by the brilliant director Kenny Leon. After twenty-five years of plays with MTC, I’ve never looked forward to sharing a story with an audience more than I am with *The Balusters*."

With a title that riffs on ballbuster, this play promises to be one of the year's most highly anticipated comedies. MTC produced *Eureka Day*, which won a Tony Award last season, and this new work similarly tackles a small community with big feelings.

The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre is a historic Broadway theatre located in New York City. Established in 1925, the theatre is managed by Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a leading professional theatre producer. Originally named the Biltmore Theatre, it was renamed Samuel J. Friedman in 2008 to honor the late American publicist. The theatre seats over 650 people and is renowned for its excellent acoustics and state-of-the-art light and sound systems. In the heart of the city, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre is easily accessible through multiple modes of transportation. If commuting by subway, take the 1, 2, 3, 7, S, A, C, E, N, R, Q, W, Fourth Street lines to 42nd Street. From the station, it's just a short walk to the theatre. For those driving, numerous parking garages are available nearby. The theatre is also well-served by numerous bus lines. However, due to the busy nature of the city, public transport is a recommended choice.

The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre originally opened on December 7, 1925 as the Biltmore Theatre. Herbert J. Krapp designed the building for impresario Irwin Chanin. Its inaugural production was *Easy Come Easy Go*. 

From 1952 to 1962, CBS used the theatre for television and radio broadcasting purposes. In 1963, it reopened as a traditional theatre with Neil Simon's *Barefoot in the Park*.

In 1987, the theatre closed following an arson attack and sat vacant for 14 years. In 2001, Manhattan Theatre Club took over the venue and reopened the performance space in 2003 after renovations. MTC renamed it the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on September 4, 2008, to honor the Broadway publicist.

The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre is closest to the 50th Street subway stop on the C and E line. The closest bus stops are 8 Av/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M34A-SBS line.

The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre is located across the street from three popular pre- and post-show restaurants: Trattoria Trecolori (Italian), Glass House Tavern (American), and Friedman's (American). Also nearby are the Irish pubs Mean Fiddler and Playwrights Celtic Pub, as well as Restaurant Row, the stretch of 46th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues lined with eateries.

I saw *Hamilton* Wednesday last at the Richard Rogers Theatre. Last night I went to bed with *Hamilton*. I had Lin-Manuel Miranda's script all to myself and devoured it. There is so much information, not to mention plain old smarts, that is packed into this show that reading the text is an exercise in pure pleasure. And once again I came away with the same conclusion. This is a story ABOUT Alexander Hamilton while at the same time it is the story OF Aaron Burr.

Burr (Leslie Odom, Jr.) welcomes us to the evening almost purring:

How does a b*st*rd, orphan, son of a wh*re And a Scotsman dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot In the Caribbean, by Providence impoverished, to squalor Grow up to be a hero and a scholar?

Who did this immigrant Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) think he was? Burr was the son of money. Hamilton was the son of chance and fortune. Burr was willing to wait for his just rewards; Hamilton preferred the direct route.

... I'm just like my country I'm young, scrappy and hungry And I'm not throwing away my shot

Hamilton arrives from Nevis in the Bahamas just as the country is splintering into a new incarnation. He lands in New York, the center of everything, and works his way up the revolutionary ladder. He sits at the right hand of God in the person of George Washington (Christopher Jackson) and pines for a command that is denied him until there is no other option.

Hamilton did not live in a vacuum, however. Events and people were moving around him like a hurricane. The women in his life were a match in every way to the men. "The Schuyler Sisters," Angelica (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Eliza (Phillipa Soo), and Peggy (Alysha Deslorieux on the night I was there), are the center of New York's solar system. While Washington in planning battle, there is a social life to be created. Angelica is looking for a mind at work, and when both she and her sister, Eliza, are smitten by Hamilton, she steps aside in a scene that is tragic and gallant.

As each element is added to the story, the tapestry becomes richer and more dense. Family brings new responsibility but does not alter Hamilton's trajectory. As the new country is formed, he stays in the inner circle, annoying Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) who was in France for most of the war, and drives Burr just a little mad. Burr's thirst for the power that Hamilton has is palpable, and as his frustration explodes in the second act with "The Room Where It Happens," the experience is visceral for us all and becomes a showstopper.

Over and over again we see the tragedy that is coming. The rules of dueling are spelled out more than one time. The future is seen as a place where these folks may not walk but in which they will be remembered. The tension and terror of the time fill the theatre. This is balanced by Miranda's eye for the absurd, the ridiculous and the insidious which evoke belly laughs, winces and mental high-fives. He gives a generous nod to King George (Jonathan Groff, who is the only white person playing a main character) who smiles and winks through three pop numbers that remind us in the nicest possible way that the little people are just that:

Cus when push comes to shove I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love

Hamilton was smart and driven - and he was a writer. It was his pen that got him out of his home, and it would be his pen that brought him to the side of Washington. Today he would have been tweeting (as is Miranda) several times a day. If the telegraph had been around he would have been tapping until the machine melted in his hands. But these were the days of longhand, quills, ink, and parchment. And delivery was by foot or, if you were lucky, horseback. Still, what Hamilton managed to crank out was not only impressive, it was world-altering. His accomplishments are listed like it was an awards banquet. He crafted a financial system. Created the national debt to save the country. Wrote *The Federalist Papers*. He wrote as if he were running out of time. And he was.

The last moments of Hamilton's life are perhaps the most delicately crafted. "I imagine death so much it seems like a memory," Hamilton sings as the bullet travels through time and relationships to reach him. And when it does, we hear the lament of Aaron Burr, still at the center of the tale, who didn't realize the world was wide enough for them both, and the chorus that delivers us back into our seats singing and asking us, "Who lives? Who dies? Who tells your story?"

Hamilton is a magnificent tapestry where all the elements of theatre are called upon to be their very best. The choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler is nothing short of mesmerizing. His work makes the entire piece pulse. Alex Lacamoire's musical direction and orchestration lifts us into the stratosphere. The scenic design by David Korins, costumes by Paul Tazewell, and lights by Howard Binkley are seamlessly integrated and a visual feast. Finally, Thomas Kail's direction is impeccable. Under his guidance this show has been pieced together into a living, breathing entity. *Hamilton* is not just a show, it is an experience - which is always the goal of art. This is not a show that you sit and watch. It is a show that takes you by the hand and pulls you into its embrace.

The end result is something much more than the story of one man. It is the story of how we each create our destiny and our mark on the world. You leave the theater thinking about what you would like to do that you have not done. You leave the theatre filled with possibility.

Dishes and glasses on the set clink and chatter. The effect seems to set the stage for something of enormous magnitude.&nbsp;Don't hold your breath. Brian Watkins's intriguing, but ultimately blurry and low-impact, group portrait inspired by James Joyce's The Dead emerges more like an artistic exercise or theme and variation on that famous 1914 short story than a fully satisfying drama on its own.&nbsp;If you're familiar with the source material and are content picking out points of connection — names, events, and other twists — there is plenty to keep you busy. Otherwise, you might find yourself wondering how many calories actors burn as they navigate staircases set designer John Lee Beatty fashioned for the production.Like Joyce's work, the action unfolds at a get-together at an old house in January. A man named Gabriel is a key guest in both stories. In Watkins's vision, Morkan (Marylouise Burke) is hosting a party that's all about renewing interest in celebrating epiphany. Gabriel, alas, a renowned author, is a no-show. That's too bad, since Gabriel alone knows what this gathering is really all about.Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy party — and a tonally jolting play. Over its intermission-free 110 minutes, the mood meanders from sophisticated dinner party to farce with a bleeding flesh wound to what seems to be shaping up as a murder story — or is it? During that time, the word "epiphany" is uttered close to three dozen times, though no one present has a firm grasp on its definition.Freddy (C.J. Wilson), a math teacher who drinks too much and just lost his mother, speaks for everybody early on when he inquires, "What is the epiphany, by the way? What are we celebrating?" Loren (Colby Minifie), a bright young woman who's helping Morkan, says, "I actually don't know."&nbsp;She's not alone. Aran (Carmen Zilles), Gabriel's worldly partner attending on his behalf, connects epiphany to the manifestation of miracles. But she's uncertain. Charlie (Francois Battiste), a lawyer, thinks epiphany may be tied to a literary tradition. His partner, Kelly (Heather Burns), a musician, has no clue.&nbsp;They and other guests, including Morkan's elderly friend Ames (Jonathan Hadary), can't rely on the internet or their phones for help on figuring things out. As everyone arrives they must stow their devices in a box that gets sealed up tighter than a Yondr pouch at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/take-me-out" target="_blank">Take Me Out</a>.&nbsp;"Is this what you do on epiphany?" asks Taylor (David Ryan Smith), a marketing pro, as he surrenders his cell. His partner, Sam (Omar Metwally), a psychiatrist with boundary issues who likes to hear himself talk, is in the dark along with everyone else.&nbsp;Over the course of the shindig, guests make the best of the weird situation. Small talk is made. Worldviews are shared. Wounds both literal and figurative are inflicted. Goose, galette, and gin are consumed. A discordant tune is played on a piano. A wistful song is sung. A dark secret is shared. Snow falls.&nbsp;In director Tyne Rafaeli's ensemble cast, a few performances stand out even while the enigmatic play doesn't leave much of an impression. Burke's signature quirky style consistently engages. Minifie's natural performance grounds and energizes the proceedings. Wilson and Hadary bring gentle hits of humanity.&nbsp;At the end, Morkan delivers a couple lines to the motley partygoers. It struck me — like an epiphany — that she might have also been addressing theatergoers through the playwright's words. "Thank you all so much for coming," she says. “You look great,” Eileen cheerfully tells Sofi at the start of Annie Baker’s quietly engaging [*Infinite Life*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26006-infinite-life-tickets), now off Broadway in a co-production of the Atlantic Theater Company and the U.K.’s National Theatre.

Sofi is anything but great. She’s in physical agony, and the same goes for Eileen. The divide between how things look and the way things are is one takeaway of this group portrait of pain and its life-rattling reverberations. 

The May 2019 setting is a clinic a couple hours north of San Francisco, where six people in their 40s and up have arrived from near and far. They’re here to fast, rest, and recuperate from various health woes that invaded their lives.

Over several days they trade banalities (“What are you reading?”) and who-knew factoids (“We also have tiny sphincters in our eyes”). They swap war stories, at times graphically, of how their bodies have betrayed them (“Whenever I pee, it’s like I’m peeing razors”). They ask questions (“Who are the happy normal people?” and “Are you all right, sweetheart?”) that defy easy answers and are surprisingly stirring in their directness. 

That’s basically it, and it all happens on a relatively nondescript open-air patio featuring floral breeze blocks and a row of cushioned chaise lounges. At some point during the play’s unbroken 105 minutes, a sense of isolation sinks in. One might imagine those seats as life rafts – built for one. Suffering is singular and isolating, yet there’s plenty of it to go around.

In a less assured playwright’s hands, it all could make for some pretty dreary doings. Not so here. As in earlier works including *Body Awareness* and *Circle Mirror Transformation*, which revealed her early on as a master miniaturist, and *The Flick*, which won her a Pulitzer Prize, Baker infuses this new work with signature humor, humanity, and feels-so-real dialogue. 

Director James Macdonald assembled an ace ensemble. Sofi, played to perfection by Christina Kirk, is estranged from her husband and grappling with being “a monster.” Her “pain thing” has been unbearable for months. Sex is torture. “I have to make sure it's really worth the pain afterwards,” she says. 

Kansas wife Eileen (Marylouise Burke, invaluable) is haunted by nerve pain that could last forever or, on the contrary, one day vanish. Elaine (Brenda Pressley), who’s from New Hampshire, is in the grip of chronic Lyme disease. Ginnie (Kristine Nielsen), is a Californian whose body failed her, and Yvette (Mia Katigbak), from Michigan, is dealing with “bladder stuff” and a host of other harrowing issues.

The sorority of suffering is changed by the arrival of Nelson (Pete Simpson), who has a history of colon cancer. He strolls shirtless into the patio, sparking ogling that recalls the likes of Lucky Vanous, the hunk from the Diet Coke ad. Nelson adds carbonation, particularly for Sofi.

As always, Baker serves up a distinct slice of life and takes her time with it. One of the play’s clever conceits is its tinkering with time. Sofi serves as a sort of human clock, making announcements like “20 minutes later” to keep us all on the same page. You have to imagine what went on during the gap. 

If *Infinite Life* doesn’t quite knit together into a fully satisfying whole, it’s always worthwhile to see what’s currently on the playwright’s mind. And it doesn’t hurt one bit when the acting is exceptional.
