Bronx Bombers coming to Broadway in Jan 2014

Producers Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo have announced that Bronx Bombers, a new American play written and directed by Eric Simonson ('Lombardi,' 'Magic/Bird') is to transfer to Broadway in Jan 2014, following its four-week Off-Broadway engagement at Primary Stages which ended on 19 Oct 2013.

Bronx Bombers, written by Eric Simonson and conceived by Fran Kirmser, will open at the Circle in the Square on 06 Feb 2014, following previews from 10 Jan 2014, and is selling tickets through to 06 Jul 2014.

Ruth. Berra. Mantle. DiMaggio. Gehrig. Jeter. The New York Yankees have never had a shortage of star players... or controversy. Bronx Bombers is a new American play that follows beloved icon Yogi Berra and his wife Carmen through a century of the team's trials and triumphs, bringing generations of Yankee greats together on one stage.

Producer Fran Kirmser said,

We are excited to bring the legacy of The New York Yankees and their proud tradition to the equally proud tradition of the Broadway Theater.
For the show's Broadway production Emmy nominated actor Peter Scolari ("Newhart"), who has starred on Broadway in 'Lucky Guy' and 'Magic/Bird' will play the role of 'Yogi Berra.' Scolari will be joined by his real-life wife Tracy Shayne ('Chicago,' 'The Phantom of the Opera) who will star as 'Carmen Berra.' They replace Richard Topol and Wendy Makkena who performed the roles Off-Broadway.

The remaining cast members, Francois Battiste (Reggie Jackson), Chris Henry Coffey (Joe DiMaggio), Bill Dawes (Mickey Mantle), Christopher Jackson (Derek Jeter), Keith Nobbs (Billy Martin), John Wernke (Lou Gehrig) and C.J. Wilson (Babe Ruth), are all reprising their roles from the show's Off-Broadway run.

The design team for Bronx Bombers includes Beowulf Borritt (Sets), David C. Woolard (Costumes), Jason Lyons (Lights) and Lindsay Jones (Original Music & Sound).

Joining Kirmser and Ponturo as special producing partners for Bronx Bombers are the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball, marking these organizations first foray on Broadway.

Kirmser's and Ponturo's production company, Kirmser Ponturo Group, seeks to combine the drama of sports and theater. In 2010 they presented the Broadway premiere of 'Lombardi,' which tells the story of the Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi, followed in 2012 by the Broadway premiere of 'Magic/Bird,' a true story of basketball legends Magic Johnson's and Larry Bird's rivalry and friendship.
