Broadway dims its lights in memory of Thomas Meehan

In accordance with The Broadway League, the Broadway theatres will dim their marquee lights tonight in memory of three-time Tony Award-winning writer Thomas Meehan.

Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin commented:

"Thomas Meehan was a key collaborator on some of the most memorable productions in recent Broadway history. His work brought deeper meaning and complexity to well-known characters. Audiences all over the world will continue to be delighted and engaged with his stories and his words in years to come. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues."

Mr. Meehan was born in Ossining, New York, on August 14, 1929 and passed away on August 21, 2017, in NYC, at the age of 88. The lights will be dimmed at exactly 7:45pm tonight for one minute.

Thomas Meehan won Tony Awards in the category of "Best Book of a Musical" for 'Annie' (1977), 'The Producers' (2001) and 'Hairspray' (2003). He also earned a Tony nomination 'Cry-Baby' (2008). Other Broadway credits include 'I Remember Mama,' 'Ain't Broadway Grand,' 'Bombay Dreams,' 'Young Frankenstein,' 'Elf,' 'Chaplin,' and 'Rocky.' On screen, he won an Emmy Award in 1970 for 'Annie, the Women in the Life of a Man.' Other TV & Film credits include "Hairspray Live!," "Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas," "1984," "Spaceballs," "One Magic Christmas," and "To Be or Not to Be."
