Brigadoon postpones Broadway engagement and cancels world premiere at Boston

The Broadway revival of Lerner and Loewes Brigadoon, directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford and scheduled to play in Boston this fall, prior to a Broadway opening, has been postponed.

The delay is due to the lack of an appropriate Broadway theatre in Spring, 2009. A revised schedule for the production will be announced at a later date.

The musical's pre-Broadway engagement, announced to play at Boston from 21 Oct - 16 Nov 2008 at the Colonial Theatre, has now been cancelled.

Brigadoon has a score by Frederick Loewe, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, and includes the songs Almost Like Being In Love, Waiting for My Dearie, Come to Me, Bend to Me, There But For You Go I, Ill Go Home With Bonnie Jean, and The Heather on the Hill.

The musical tells the story of two disillusioned Americans on vacation in Scotland who wander into a village that comes alive every 100 years for only one day. The show features an original book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe.

The revival will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Rob Ashford (Thoroughly Modern Millie), and will feature a new book by Tony Award-winner John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation).

Rob Ashford won the 2002 Tony Award for his choreography of 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' (2002), and was nominated for tony Awards for his choreography of 'Cry-Baby' (2008), 'Curtains' (2007) and the 'Wedding Singer' (2006). Ashford recently directed and choreographed the critically acclaimed production of 'Parade' at the Donmar Warehouse, receiving Olivier Award nominations for his direction and choreography. Brigadoon will be Ashford's Broadway directional Debut.

John Guare, who has written a revised book based on Lerners original, won a Tony Award for his book for the musical version of 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' (1971), and was Tony-nominated for his plays, 'The House of Blue Leaves' (1986), 'Six Degrees of Separation' (1990) and Four Baboons Adoring the Sun (1992), as well as the book for the musical 'Sweet Smell of Success' (2002).

The creative team features Christopher Oram (sets and costumes), Paule Constable (lighting) and Brian Ronan (sound).

Brigadoon will be produced by Ostar Productions and Liza Lerner.

This will be the fifth Broadway revival of Brigadoon, the musical had it's Broadway premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre where it ran from 13 Mar 1947 - 31 Jul 1948, that production was directed by Robert Lewis and choreographed by Agnes de Mille. It was last revived in 1980 at the Majestic Theatre, directed by Vivian Matalon and once again choreographed by Agnes De Mille.

Brigadoon was adapted into a popular 1954 MGM film starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse. The musical established Lerner & Loewe as one of Broadways great songwriting teams, with their later collaborations to include 'Paint Your Wagon,' 'My Fair Lady,' 'Gigi' and 'Camelot.'
