Bad Jews to transfer to Laura Pels Theatre
The Roundabout Thatre Company have announced that their Underground production of Joshua Elias Harmon's comedy Bad Jews, which played at the company's Black Box Theatre in 2012, will now have a full Off-Broadway production in Sep 2013 playing at the Laura Pels Theatre - dates to be announced.
The play will once again be directed by Daniel Aukin and feature original cast members: Tracee Chimo, Philip Ettinger, Molly Ranson and Michael Zegen.
Bad Jews tells the story of Daphna Feygenbaum, a 'Real Jew' with an Israeli boyfriend she met on Birthright. When Daphna's cousin Liam brings home his shiksa girlfriend Melody and declares ownership of their grandfather's Chai necklace, a vicious brawl over family, faith and legacy ensues.
The play received many good reviews: 'Bad Jews is delicious nasty fun' (New York Post), 'A very promising start by newcomer Joshua Harmon' (New York Magazine), 'Tracee Chimo is marvelous, her versatility is startling' (New York Times).
The Roundabout Underground production of Bad Jews opened at the Black Box Theatre on 30 Oct 2012, following previews from 05 Oct. The sold out run was extended by two weeks and played its final performance on 30 Dec 2012.
The Roundabout has also announced its five-night event of new play readings for this year, running from 25 Feb - 1 Mar 2013 at the Black Box Theatre. This year's readings are Jonathan Caren's 'The Recommendation,' Rachel Bonds' 'Swimmers,' Mat Smart's 'Tinker to Evers to Chance,' Christian Durso's 'Shine' and Kate Gersten's 'Benefit of the Doubt.'
Roundabout Underground is an initiative designed to foster new works by emerging theatre artists in the Black Box Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg center for Theatre. Part of the New Play Initiative, Roundabout Underground allows Roundabout to take artistic risks that are not viable on its larger stages, whether giving a debut production to an emerging writer or allowing an experienced director to go back to his or her creative roots.
