Adding Machine to close on 20 Jul


The New York Premiere of Adding Machine, based on Elmer Rice�s 1923 expressionist play, has posted early closing notices, and will play its final performance on 20 Jul 2008. At the time of its closing, the musical will have played 16 previews and 149 regular performances.

The show opened at the Minetta Lane on 26 Feb 2008, following previews from 7 Feb, for a run that was originally scheduled to close on 15 Jun 2008, but then announced an eleven week extension, which should have seen the musical perform through to 31 Aug 2008.

Producer Scott Morfee stated, �Adding Machine is a labor of love for all involved. The New York production, which sits so perfectly at the Minetta Lane Theatre, has allowed this musical to get the kind of attention it deserves. My partners and I are proud to know that Adding Machine will prove to be a significant addition to the repertoire of opera companies and adventurous theater troupes around the world, and the introduction of an extraordinary new voice in the musical theater (Mr. Schmidt).

Adding Machine was awarded 2 Outer Critics Circle Awards (Outstanding New Off Broadway Musical, Outstanding New Score), 4 Lucille Lortel Awards (including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Director, Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Lighting Design), 4 Obie Awards (plus 10 total nominations from the Drama Desk Awards and Drama League Awards, including Best Musical).

Adding Machine, score by Joshua Schmidt and a collaborative libretto by Jason Loewith and Joshua Schmidt, with direction by David Cromer, tells the story of Mr. Zero, a nameless cog in American business, as he journeys through life, death, and an afterlife romance in the Elysian Fields. After twenty-five years of exemplary work, Mr. Zero finds that his pencil and paper efforts have been replaced by a mechanical adding machine. In a rage, Mr. Zero decides to exact revenge by murdering his boss.

The cast features Cyrilla Baer as �Mrs. Zero�, Joel Hatch as �Mr. Zero� and Amy Warren as �Daisy� who are all reprising their performances from the original production. They are joined by Joe Farrell as �Shrdlu,� Jeff Still in multiple roles as the �Boss,� �Fixer� and �Charles,� Adinah Alexander as �Mrs. Two,� Niffer Clarke as �Mrs. One,� Roger E. DeWitt as �Mr. Two� and Daniel Marcus as �Mr. One.�

The creative team comprises Takeshi Kata (sets), Kristine Knanishu (costumes), Keith Parham(lighting) and Tony Smolenski (sound).

Adding Machine, had its World Premiere at Chicago�s Next Theatre Company last season (winning the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Musical).
