The explosive success of *A Strange Loop* is decades in the making. Michael R. Jackson spent 20 years working on the *A Strange Loop* musical, which began as a post-college monologue and gradually changed as Jackson did, and new collaborators came on. His first inspirations, beyond his own life, were the artists Liz Phair, Tori Amos, and Joni Mitchell, whose music (along with R&B, Motown, and Broadway influences) inspired the sound of the show. It was director Stephen Brackett who had the idea to make the Thoughts an all-Black and all-queer group, and each cast member's personality has influenced their character — many of the Thoughts have been with the show for years.

Now, the *A Strange Loop* Broadway production is the third major run of the show in just three years, and all three were met with rave reviews for successfully blending a heartfelt emotional journey with uproarious, pop-culture-infused humor. In 2019, the musical made its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons off Broadway and earned nearly 20 awards. *A Strange Loop* then opened at Washington, D.C.'s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in fall 2021 for its pre-Broadway tryout.

In 2022, once again directed by Stephen Brackett and choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly, and with the whole D.C. cast in tow, *A Strange Loop* made its long-awaited Broadway bow at the Lyceum Theatre. It was the most Tony-nominated show of the season with 11 nods, winning its sixth Best Musical prize and Best Book of a Musical.

Lots of celebrities have seen and loved *A Strange Loop* on Broadway, too, including Anna Wintour, Bette Midler, Cynthia Nixon, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jesse Williams, Pete Buttigieg, Kandi Burruss, Frankie Grande, Uzo Aduba, Ilana Glazer, Rachel Bloom, Rita Moreno, and Vanessa Williams — just to name a few!

## What to Watch For

- The musical shares a title with the Liz Phair song "Strange Loop." Phair's 1993 album *Exile in Guyville* also lends its name to a *Strange Loop* tune, "Exile in Gayville."
- A strange loop is also a scientific phenomenon coined by the scholar Douglas Hofstadter. According to Hofstadter, a "strange loop" happens in hierarchical systems: A person can move up or down the ranks of power and status, but they always find themselves back where they began.
- Among the many similarities between Michael R. Jackson and his *A Strange Loop* protagonist, Usher, is that both share a name with a famous singer. (Jackson sometimes goes by "the living Michael Jackson" on social media to differentiate himself from the King of Pop — who also has a current Broadway musical dedicated to him!)
- Some Black artistic icons make cameos in *A Strange Loop* as characters, like James Baldwin and Whitney Houston. Jackson has also written in references to other famous musicals, including *The Color Purple,* *The Lion King*, and Stephen Sondheim's *Company* (which is also currently being revived on Broadway). Can you spot them?
- When *A Strange Loop* won Best Musical, it made Jennifer Hudson, one of the show's producers, only the 17th person to EGOT, or earn an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.
- Fans of the recent *tick, tick... BOOM!* film might see some similarities between that story, of a young Jonathan Larson trying to write a hit musical, and Usher's journey as a writer in *A Strange Loop*. Coincidentally, Jackson once received the Jonathan Larson Grant in support of his own work!

## What is *A Strange Loop* about?

*A Strange Loop* is a musical by a Black, gay writer about a Black, gay writer working on a show about a Black, gay writer. The main character is Usher, who works a day job he hates as a theatre usher. His passion is writing, and he wants to make a go of that, so he spends his spare time working on an original musical, essentially about "himself." The main character of Usher's show is, like Usher, a writer who hates his day job and wants to follow his passion.

But it's not so easy for Usher: The one professional writing gig he gets — ghostwriting a new Tyler Perry play — he hates. He's at a constant war with himself as an artist too, battling the self-deprecating, straight-shooting thoughts in his head, brought to life in *A Strange Loop* by a raucous ensemble. He has to contend with his own demons in order to free himself from his "strange loop" and become not just the writer with the day job who wants to make it, but the writer who makes it.

*A Strange Loop* had its world premiere off Broadway in 2019. The acclaimed production won Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, Obie, Outer Critic's Circle, Off-Broadway Alliance, New York Drama Critic's Circle, and Drama League Awards, including multiple Best Musical accolades, Best Actor nods for Larry Owens as Usher, and awards for Jackson's book and songs. Jackson himself won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for *A Strange Loop*, becoming the first Black person to do so for writing a musical.

The musical went on to run in Washington, D.C., at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. With the exception of Owens, the cast and leading creative team — including director Brackett and choreographer Raja Feather Kelly — reprised their roles for the D.C. production, which was extended by a week due to popular demand. The same team from *A Strange Loop* in D.C. moved with the production to Broadway.

"This must be how people who saw the first performances of Show Boat, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/oklahoma" target="_blank">Oklahoma!</a>, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/company" target="_blank">Company</a>, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/rent" target="_blank">Rent</a>, or <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/hamilton" target="_blank">Hamilton</a> felt." Though I've witnessed and studied the innovations in each of those musicals, none of them are as revolutionary as what Michael R. Jackson has accomplished with his Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, now making its Broadway debut.That is thanks to his splendid writing and craftsmanship, as well as flawless and often shocking performances given by the cast ― including a fresh-out-of-college leading man, Jaquel Spivey, in his Broadway debut.&nbsp;Spivey plays Usher, a Black, gay man who, while working as a Broadway usher and ghostwriting a Tyler Perry play to make money, is trying to finish his musical about a Black gay man who is writing a musical, ad infinitum. The problem is he doesn't know how to complete the story. The further he dives, the more aware and eager each new iteration of himself becomes to sabotage the process.Those interruptions manifest onstage as vicious thoughts who gleefully shred Usher's confidence. They transform into warped versions of his family and reenact humiliating sexual encounters, while reminding him that he is own worst enemy and pushing him to embrace the truth behind why he has put this entire enterprise together.As Thought #2 (James Jackson Jr., an extravagant wit who burns through every scene with the force of a supernova) inquires after Usher figuratively torches the stage, "Real life is making hateful anti-Black caricatures in a Tyler Perry-style gospel play?" That is in response to Usher's staging of a funeral for his cousin Darnell, who refused to take HIV medication because his church-fueled self-hate taught him AIDS was God's punishment for being gay.&nbsp;Much like Jackson, whose best friend died for the same reason in real life, Usher is haunted by the senselessness of that death as well as the hypocrisy of the church, modern families, and queer culture, all of which abet this ongoing health crisis without working to stop such tragedies.&nbsp;As Jackson told me in an interview after he won the Pulitzer, his mission is to destroy HIV stigma and to ensure no one else suffers as his friend did. Rather than pen an angry op-ed, with A Strange Loop, he uses devastating lampoons on popular culture and revolutionizes the conventions of musical theatre to make audiences investigate where their own loathing began.&nbsp;In his meditative 11 o'clock number, "Memory Song," Usher shepherds us through his own conversion into "one lone Black gay boy I knew who chose to turn his back on the Lord." In revealing a version of his own life story through Usher, Jackson tells us it does not have to be this way. We don't have to become enmeshed in the self-perpetuating loop of trauma and abuse; we can turn our backs on the fears that lord over us and do the much scarier thing: figure out how to live without destroying one another.A Strange Loop's director Stephen Brackett and choreographer Raja Feather Kelly bravely punctuate each perverse and revelatory ode that Jackson has penned into his work. But none of this would be possible without the phenomenal cast, who count as the funniest and most thrilling group of singers currently on Broadway. Chief among them, L Morgan Lee, James Jackson Jr., and John-Andrew Morrison provide sensational vocals and painfully hilarious personifications of Jackson's thoughts.Spivey ― who is vulnerable, sassy, inquisitive, and incendiary ― grounds their work, not because he overwhelms the stage through sheer power and vocal charisma, but because he knows how to pull back and allow us to come to him. His performance is a conversation between his onstage partners and the audience that shows us we will fail, and we can try again until we finally overcome our own strange loop. Lyceum Theatre  - TodayTix

The Lyceum Theatre is Broadway's oldest continually operating theatre. Designed by Herts & Tallant and built by producer-manager David Frohman, the theatre officially opened on November 2, 1903. It was a replacement for Frohman's previous Lyceum Theatre on Fourth Street, which closed in 1902.

The inaugural production at the venue was the play *The Proud Prince*. The Lyceum Theatre was purchased in 1940 by a conglomerate of producers which included George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and in 1950, the Shubert Organization took ownership of the theatre. In 1974, the Lyceum Theatre became the first Broadway theatre to be granted landmark status.
