Joshua Browning Carter Jackson was born on June 11, 1978 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is known for his TV roles as Cole Lockhart in The Affair, Peter Bishop in Fringe, and Pacey Witter in Dawson's Creek.

Jackson spent the first few years of his life growing up in California before moving back to Vancouver at age 8. He attended Ideal Mini School and later transferred to Kitsilano Secondary School. He made his feature film debut in Crooked Hearts in 1991, which was closely followed by a role in the TV movie Pay Off. His first big break came after being cast as Charlie Conway in Disney's The Mighty Ducks in 1992, and he would reprise the role in two sequels: D2: The Mighty Ducks in 1994 and D3: The Mighty Ducks in 1996. He became a regular in Hollywood throughout the 1990s, starring in such popular teen films as Scream 2Urban Legend, and Cruel Intentions.

In 1998, he was cast in one of his career-defining roles as Pacey Witter in Dawson's Creek until 2003, appearing in a total of 128 episodes on The WB. Over the next five years, Jackson starred in a string of Hollywood and independent films including AmericanoAurora BorealisShadows in the SunBobbyBattle in SeattleShutter, and One Week. In 2008, he landed his next big TV role, starring as Peter Bishop in 100 episodes of Fox's Fringe through 2013. In 2014, he was cast to play Cole Lockhart in the Golden Globe-winning series The Affair on Showtime.

On stage, Jackson made his West End debut opposite Sir Patrick Stewart in David Mamet's two-man play A Life in the Theatre at London's Apollo Theatre from January 27 to April 30, 2005. He made his Off-Broadway debut as Brian in Second Stage Theater's production of Smart People from January 27 to March 6, 2016 and would go on to give a critically acclaimed performance as James Leeds in the Berkshire Theatre Group's revival of Mark Medoff's Tony Award-winning play Children of a Lesser God in the summer of 2017. The production transferred to Studio 54 on Broadway from March 22, 2018 and ran through May 27, 2018, marking Jackson's Broadway debut.
