T. Oliver Reid to play Hermes in 'Hadestown' on Broadway
Reid replaces Tony Award winner André De Shields.
There's a new god in town! T. Oliver Reid has been announced as the permanent replacement for the role of Hermes in Hadestown. He will take over the role at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre from June 14.
Reid replaces original cast member André De Shields, who won a 2019 Tony Award for his portrayal of Hermes. De Shields played his final performance on May 29, and understudies have been playing the role in the meantime.
An original cast member himself and the show's dance captain, Reid is an understudy for the roles of Hermes, Hades, and the Workers Chorus. He was also the subject of social media buzz when he stepped in as one of the Fates at the last minute back in March, when Covid-19 sidelined multiple actors.
Hadestown reimagines the ancient Greek myths of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades, and Persephone with folk and jazz music. The musician Orpheus makes a dangerous journey to Hades's underworld — portrayed as a bleak, exploitative factory — to save Eurydice and change the world with a song.
