MTC announces Prodigal Son by John Patrick Shanley

The Manhattan Theatre Club have announced the world premiere of Prodigal Son, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley which will begin previews on 19 January 2016 and open officially on 9 February 2016 at New York City Center - Stage I.

Described as a "passionate, explosive portrait of a young man on the verge of salvation or destruction", the play follows a 17-year-old boy from The Bronx finds himself suddenly in a private school in New Hampshire. He's violent, gifted, alienated, on fire with a ferocious loneliness. Two faculty members wrestle with the dilemma: Is the kid a star or a disaster?

Further details of cast and creative team will be announced at a later date.

John Patrick Shanley is a Tony, Oscar and Pulitzer Prize winner whose writing credits include 'Outside Mullingar', 'Danny and the Deep Blue Sea', 'Savage in Limbo', 'Italian-American Reconciliation', and 'Beggars in the House of Plenty'. For his play, 'Doubt', he received both the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize. He has nine films to his credit, most recently 'Doubt', with Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis.
