Lincoln Center Theater announces opening dates for 'Flying Over Sunset' and 'Intimate Apparel'

The rescheduled productions will start performances in December and January.

Get ready for a trip —the Lincoln Center Theater production of Flying Over Sunset will now open at Broadway's Vivian Beaumont Theater on Dec. 13. Preview performances will begin on Nov. 11. The new musical was about to start previews in 2020 when theatre shut due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Find out more about Flying Over Sunset Broadway tickets here.

Lincoln Center Theater also announced that the forthcoming opera adaptation of Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel will start performances off Broadway in the Mitzi Newhouse Theater on Jan. 13, with an opening night of Jan. 27.

"Ecstatic excitement barely begins to describe the feelings we have about reopening," artistic director André Bishop said in a statement. "LCT will be BACK with two wildly different musical works whose lives were cut short well over a year ago. Like all the other theatres that are reopening in New York and all over the country, we rejoice and we are grateful.  And boy, do we look forward to seeing our audiences again!  It will be a happy time."

Inspired by the lives of Aldous Huxley, Clare Booth Luce, and Cary Grant, Flying Over Sunset is a fictional account of the individual's experimentations with LSD. With a book and direction by James Lapine, Flying Over Sunset features music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Michael Korie, The cast will remain the same with Harry Hadden-Paton, Carmen Cusack, and Tony Yazbek as Huxley, Luce, and Grant respectively. 

Initimate Apparel follows a single, African-American seamstress named Esther in New York City in 1905 and explores her communications with an unknown suitor working on the Panama Canal. The new opera will feature music by Ricky Ian Gordon, with a libretto by Nottage based on her play. The production will be directed by Bartlett Sher. Kearstin Piper Brown will portray Esther, with Chabrelle Williams taking on the role on Saturday matinees.

Flying Over Sunset is at the Vivian Beaumont Theater from Nov. 11.

Intimate Apparel is at the Mitzi Newhouse Theater from Jan. 13.
