Kimberly Akimbo

What's an anagram for "Booth"? Kimberly Akimbo, the musical adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's same-named play, is set to play Broadway's Booth Theatre this fall. Performances begin October 12 ahead of a November 10 opening night.

The Kimberly Akimbo musical premiered with Atlantic Theater Company in fall 2021 to acclaim; the four-star New York Theatre Guide review called the show a "funny-sad musical treat" that "satisfies and surprises." Kimberly Akimbo won four Outer Critics Circle Awards, three Lucille Lortel Awards, and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical, and has received nine Drama Desk Award nominations, in 2022.

The show centers on Kimberly, a bright and fun teenager who happens to be afflicted with an aging disease that makes her appear elderly. But that's the least of her worries — in the show, she also contends with possible felony charges from a money scheme, personality problems, and family secrets.

Abaire adapted his script for the musical and wrote the lyrics, and five-time Tony nominee Jeanine Tesori wrote the music. Choreography is by Danny Mefford and direction is by Jessica Stone. The rest of the creative team, as newly announced, includes scenic designer David Zinn; costume designer Sarah Laux; lighting designer Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew; sound designer Kai Harada; projection designer Lucy MacKinnon; wig, hair, and make-up designer J. Jared Janas; and music director Chris Fenwick. All but Oi-Suk Yew worked on the Off-Broadway premiere.

As previously announced, the cast from the Atlantic production returns for the Broadway premiere, led by Tony Award winner Victoria Clark as Kimberly, alongside Justin Cooley, Tony Award nominee Steven Boyer, Alli Mauzey, Bonnie Milligan, Olivia Elease Hardy, Fernell Hogan, Michael Iskander, and Nina White.
