The critically celebrated play by David Lindsay-Abaire, Kimberly Akimbo, now becomes an exciting new musical. Lindsay-Abaire is joined by beloved composer Jeanine Tesori for Kimberly Akimbo, a must-see new musical about loneliness, found families, and creating some happiness when time is against you. Kimberly Akimbo transfers to Broadway in fall 2022. Kimberly Akimbo tickets are on sale soon.
Kim is a wonderful, charming New Jersey teen who just happens to look like a 72 year old woman. Kim suffers from a disease which causes her body to age nearly five times faster than most. Yet somehow, that might be the least of her problems. Kim’s family is collapsing as long-held secrets come out, and she’s caught up in crazy money making schemes which might put her in jail. With the help of her only friend, a teenage boy, can Kim figure it all out?
Kimberly Akimbo began as a play, written by Lindsay-Abaire and first produced at South Coast Repertory in 2001. The play was later produced in New York by Manhattan Theatre Club in 2003, earning rave reviews, particularly for its star Marylouise Burke. Burke played Kim, a teenager trapped in an older woman’s body. Lindsay-Abaire is a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, also known for works such as Rabbit Hole and Good People.
For the Kimberly Akimbo musical adaptation, Lindsay-Abaire has teamed up with Jeanine Tesori, a Tony Award winner for Fun Home and one of the most celebrated musical theater composers of her generation. Tesori has previously worked with Lindsay-Abaire on Shrek: The Musical, and her other works include Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline, or Change, and Violet.
Together, this dream team now crafts Kim’s singular and heartbreaking story into a must-see new musical. Kimberly Akimbo Off-Broadway will play at Atlantic Theater Company, which just a few years ago debuted new musical The Band’s Visit before it travelled to Broadway and won 10 Tony Awards.
