Jeremy Pope, Chuck Cooper & Austin Pendleton will reprise their roles in the Broadway transfer of Choir Boy

Tarell Alvin McCraney's Choir Boy begins performances at Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on December 27, 2018.

Initial casting has been confirmed for Manhattan Theatre Club's Broadway premiere of Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney's Choir Boy, directed by Drama Desk Award nominee Trip Cullman, which begins previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on December 27, 2018, before an official opening on January 22, and a limited engagement through to March 3, 2019.

Reprising their respective roles from MTC's sold-out, twice-extended, critically acclaimed run at New York City Center's Studio at Stage II in the summer of 2013 will be Jeremy Pope (as Pharus), Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper (as Headmaster Marrow) and Tony Award nominee Austin Pendleton (as Mr. Pendleton). Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

Choir Boy marks the Broadway debut for Jeremy Pope, who is an established recording artist and has also previously appeared off-Broadway in The View Upstairs and Invisible Thread and regionally in the Broadway-bound musical Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations.

Chuck Cooper has 15 Broadway credits to his name including a Tony Award win for The Life in 1997. He most recently appeared on the Great White Way for MTC in Prince of Broadway and other notable credits include The Cherry Orchard, Act One, Romeo and Juliet, Caroline, or Change, and Chicago.

Austin Pendleton is an actor, director and playwright who earned a Tony nomination in 1981 for directing The Little Foxes. He has previously acted on Broadway in The Diary of Anne Frank, Grand Hotel, Doubles, An American Millionaire, The Little Foxes, Hail Scrawdyke!, and Fiddler on the Roof.

Synopsis: "For half a century, the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?"

This production will mark the Broadway debut for Tarell Alvin McCraney, who is best known as a 2017 Oscar-winning writer of "Moonlight".
