How I Learned to Drive postponed until 2020-2021 Broadway season

The production will reunite the play's original stars, Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse, on the Great White Way.

Manhattan Theatre Club has officially postponed its Broadway premiere of Paula Vogel's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece How I Learned to Drive, which is now expected to be presented during the 2020-2021 Broadway season. More details to follow.

The production, which will reunite the original Off-Broadway stars, Tony Award winner Mary-Louise Parker and Tony Award nominee David Morse, with the show's original director Mark Brokaw, was scheduled to play the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre from March 27 through June 7, 2020, with an official opening set for April 22.

Synopsis: "How I Learned to Drive is a remarkably timely and moving memory play about a woman coming to terms with a charismatic uncle who impacts her past, present and future life."

Additional cast members set to appear included original Off-Broadway star Johanna Day (reprising her role as Female Greek Chorus), alongside Alyssa May Gold (as Teenage Greek Chorus), and Chris Myers (as Male Greek Chorus).

Originally produced by the Vineyard Theatre in 1997, How I Learned to Drive was showered with critical acclaim and a plethora of awards. Alongside the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Vogel's drama won the Drama Desk Award and Lucille Lortel Award for "Outstanding Play," the New York Drama Critics Award and Drama Critics Circle Award for "Best Play," the Outer Critics Circle Award for "Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play," and four Obie Awards, among others.

Mary-Louise Parker was last seen on the Great White Way in the Broadway premiere of The Sound Inside from September 14, 2019 through January 12, 2020 at Studio 54. Her Broadway credits also include a 2001 Tony Award-winning performance in Proof, a 2005 Tony-nominated performance in Reckless, and her 1990 Tony-nominated Broadway debut in Prelude to a Kiss, alongside roles in Bus Stop, Hedda Gabler, The Snow Geese, and Heisenberg. On screen, she has won a Golden Globe for her TV role on Showtime's "Weeds" and an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance in HBO's adaptation of Angels in America.

David Morse last appeared on Broadway in his 2018 Tony-nominated turn as Larry Slade in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh and has previously appeared in 2007's The Seafarer and 1995's On the Waterfront. He has earned Emmy nominations for "John Adams" in 2008 and for "House M.D." in 2007 and his most notable film credits include "The Hurt Locker" and "The Green Mile."

How I Learned to Drive is produced on Broadway by Manhattan Theatre Club, Daryl Roth, Cody Lassen, and The Dodgers, in association with the Vineyard Theatre.
