Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story?... Disney+, that's who! The Walt Disney Company has just announced a release date for the highly anticipated film version of the musical juggernaut Hamilton. Instead of the previously reported movie theater release date of October 15, 2021, fans will now get to see the film much earlier than anticipated. Hamilton will be streamed worldwide on Disney+ from July 3, 2020, just in time for the Independence Day weekend. Finally, something great has come from the COVID-19 pandemic for theater fans.

Lin-Manuel Miranda commented: "I'm so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought Hamilton to the screen. He's given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house. I'm so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I'm so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I'm so glad that we're able to make it happen. I'm so proud of this show. I can't wait for you to see it."

Filmed live at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016 and directed by Thomas Kail (who also helmed the stage musical), the film features the original Broadway company led by Lin-Manuel Miranda (reprising his role as Alexander Hamilton), alongside the show's Tony Award winners Leslie Odom, Jr. (as Aaron Burr), Daveed Diggs (as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), and Renée Elise Goldsberry (as Angelica Schuyler), the show's Tony Award nominees Christopher Jackson (as George Washington), Jonathan Groff (as King George), and Phillipa Soo (as Eliza Hamilton), as well as Jasmine Cephas Jones (as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds), Okieriete Onaodowan (as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison), and Anthony Ramos (as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton), with Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Hope Easterbrook, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Elizabeth Judd, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Seth Stewart, and upcoming MJ The Musical leading man Ephraim Sykes.

The partnership between Disney and producers Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller, and Thomas Kail was announced back in February. Kail decribed the film version as "a leap forward in the art of live capture" and "a cinematic stage performance that is a wholly new way to experience Hamilton."

The Broadway production of Hamilton won a grand total of 11 Tony Awards in 2016 (including 'Best Musical'), alongside a Grammy Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
