Hamilton is heading to the silver screen in 2021

The Walt Disney Company has announced a partnership with producers Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller, and Thomas Kail for an upcoming cinematic version of the musical phenomenon that is Hamilton. Disney has acquired the worldwide distribution rights for the musical, which is set to land in movie theaters on October 15, 2021.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has previously collaborated with Disney on the feature film "Mary Poppins Returns," the animated classic "Moana," the animated series "Duck Tales," and the upcoming live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid," commented: "I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations - The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin. I'm so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton - a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater. The original Broadway company starring in the film, led by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself (reprising his role as Alexander Hamilton), includes the show's Tony Award winners Leslie Odom, Jr. (as Aaron Burr), Daveed Diggs (as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), and Renée Elise Goldsberry (as Angelica Schuyler), alongside the show's Tony Award nominees Christopher Jackson (as George Washington), Jonathan Groff (as King George), and Phillipa Soo (as Eliza Hamilton), as well as Jasmine Cephas Jones (as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds), Okieriete Onaodowan (as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison), and Anthony Ramos (as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton), with Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Hope Easterbrook, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Elizabeth Judd, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Seth Stewart, and upcoming MJ The Musical leading man Ephraim Sykes.
The Tony Award-winning director of Hamilton, Thomas Kail is also set to helm the film version, which has been described as "a leap forward in the art of live capture" and "a cinematic stage performance that is a wholly new way to experience Hamilton."
The Broadway production of Hamilton, which continues to play to packed houses at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, won a grand total of 11 Tony Awards in 2016, alongside a Grammy Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
