She's stronger than yesterday! Having run to acclaim in London's West End for three years and counting, the pop musical & Juliet is making its North American premiere in Toronto ahead of a planned Broadway transfer. Get & Juliet tickets now. This musical, set to modern pop songs from the catalog of Max Martin, features an original story about what might happen if Juliet did not die at the end of Romeo & Juliet. Before you go, discover more about what to expect from this energetic, larger-than-life pop extravaganza. What is & Juliet about? The & Juliet musical kicks off nearly where Romeo & Juliet left off: right before Juliet's death. This isn't a retelling of Shakespeare's tragedy, though; it's a whole new story in which Juliet decides losing Romeo doesn't mean she should die. Instead, she goes on a journey of self-discovery to Paris. Accompanied by her friends — which include some characters from the original play, like the nurse, as well as new characters, like her friends Francois and May — she goes to parties, makes new friends, falls in love (again), and sees what the world has to offer beyond the stifling walls of Verona. The whole story is narrated by Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, who are actually writing the story as they go along. Anne learns of Shakespeare's original Romeo & Juliet ending and dislikes it, so she takes over. With Anne at the helm, Juliet gets more agency and depth independent of her relationship with Romeo, and a more positive lease on life. Anne even writes herself and Shakespeare in as characters, and debating their different ideas for the story ends up helping them work out the issues in their marriage. The story is full of energy and laughs, as the & Juliet book is by David West Read, a writer on the Emmy Award-winning Schitt's Creek. What songs are in & Juliet? You may listen to top 40 radio, but you've never heard your favorite songs like this. & Juliet has one new song, but the show mostly includes existing popular music. All 30 pop songs in & Juliet were written or co-written by Max Martin, who's behind the hits of stars like Britney Spears, P!nk, Kesha, Katy Perry, *NSYNC, and The Backstreet Boys. Anyone who grew up with, or just knows all the words to, hits from the 90s through today will relive their teenage dreams at this show. Here are all the songs you'll hear — how many do you know? "Larger than Life" "I Want It That Way" "...Baby One More Time" "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" "Domino" "Show Me Love" "Blow" "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" "Overprotected" "Confident" "Teenage Dream" "Oops!... I Did It Again" "I Kissed a Girl" "It's My Life" "Love Me Like You Do" "Since U Been Gone" "Whataya Want From Me" "One More Try" "Problem" / "Can't Feel My Face" "That's the Way It Is" "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" "As Long as You Love Me" "It's Gonna Be Me" "Shape of My Heart" "Stronger" "Fuckin' Perfect" "Roar" "Can't Stop the Feeling!"More information about & Juliet& Juliet had its world premiere in 2019 in London's West End, where it's still playing as of 2022. The show received nine Olivier Award nominations and critical acclaim; a London Theatre review reads, "Frequently resembling a series of pop videos come to life — thanks to performance platforms that come out of the floor, or benches that take on an aerial life of their own in Soutra Gilmour's sets, aided by Andrzej Goulding's dazzling projections — it is performed with a glinting knowingness and powerful pop theatre voices."Since debuting in London, & Juliet has now made its North American debut in Toronto; that production is the pre-Broadway tryout ahead of the planned premiere of & Juliet on Broadway. The musical is also scheduled to make its Australian premiere in Melbourne in February 2023.As long as you love pop music, contemporized classics, and plenty of fun, it's gonna be you that sees & Juliet in New York soon. The global phenomenon of K-pop is now taking over Broadway with a new musical. Check back for information on tickets to KPOP on Broadway. KPOP tickets will be available on New York Theatre Guide soon. The KPOP musical takes audiences behind the scenes of the competitive, energetic, high-stakes Korean pop music industry, and the talent, ambition, and commercial interests that drive it in equal measure. The show centers on a K-pop singer dealing with an inner struggle that could bring down a major K-pop music label and rock the industry. She's dealing with this, though, on the day of a special one-night-only concert featuring some of K-pop's biggest stars. Amid the drama, you can expect plenty of high-octane, joyous, and catchy music and choreography that will have you grooving along. The characters in KPOP on Broadway may be fictional, but they're played by real-life K-pop stars. The lead role is originated by Luna, a member of the K-pop group f(x) who also has a solo career as a singer and Korean musical theatre actress. Kevin Woo of U-KISS, Min-Young Lee of Miss A, and Bohyung Kim of Spica are also part of the original KPOP Broadway cast. The world premiere of KPOP was at Ars Nova in 2017, starring Mean Girls' Ashley Park and Be More Chill's Jason Tam. That production, co-produced by Ars Nova and Ma-Yi Theater Company and conceived by Woodshed Collective, was immersive. Audiences played the part of "focus groups" brought in by a K-pop agent wanting to know how to make K-pop and its stars appealing to an American audience. The audience was taken through two floors' worth of rooms set to look like rehearsal spaces, recording studios, and finally a theatre where the stars put on their finished performance. In between, audiences also saw them deal with perfectionist pressure, gaining fame and likability at the expense of tireless work and distancing themselves from aspects of their ethnicity. The Broadway production, taking place in the more traditional, Circle in the Square Theatre, has likely changed in terms of setup and scope; that is, become less immersive. But the show's themes remain the same, and with the Off-Broadway writing team and Woodshed Collective still on hand, KPOP on Broadway still promises to be a multimedia spectacle that combines live music and dancing with video projections and more to transport audiences into the concert world, and also still dive deep into the dark underbelly of the industry. Before the premiere of KPOP in New York, the musical was slated to have a pre-Broadway run at Signature Theatre in Washington D.C from December 2021. This run was canceled amid the pandemic, so the show is opening directly on Broadway. Tickets to KPOP will be available soon.
It's all happening in October 2022, when a musical adaptation of Almost Famous, the hit 2000 movie, will premiere on Broadway. Cameron Crowe, who wrote the semi-autobiographical screenplay, has penned the book and lyrics for the musical adaptation. Check back for information on Almost Famous tickets on New York Theatre Guide. The Almost Famous musical centers on William, a child prodigy who eventually decides he wants to be a rock music journalist. While on his first assignment covering a Black Sabbath concert, the guitarist for the opening act, the up-and-coming band Stillwater, takes a liking to him. Soon, he's sent on the road with the band on assignment for Rolling Stone magazine, where he quickly discovers the inner conflicts among the band members. But he finds himself losing his objectivity as he becomes part of their inner circle and falls for their lead groupie, Penny Lane. The original movie featured a star-studded cast including Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Jason Lee, Zooey Deschanel, and more. The film was nominated for four Oscars and won for Best Original Screenplay, and also won a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture for Hudson as Penny Lane.Almost Famous is partly inspired by Crowe's own experiences writing for Rolling Stone as a teenager and includes multiple real people as characters, including rock journalists Lester Bangs and Ben Fong-Torres. Fictional characters like Penny Lane and William's mom are also loosely based on groupie Pennie Lane Trumbull of The Flying Garter Girls and Crowe's actual mother, respectively. All these characters are preserved in the musical.Crowe is making his Broadway debut with the show. But collaborating with him on Almost Famous on Broadway is a veteran composer/lyricist: Tom Kitt, who's won Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Awards, as well as a Pulitzer Prize, for his work. He won multiple accolades for composing the Pulitzer-winning musical Next to Normal in 2008, and more recently, he's been nominated for Tony Awards at three of the past four ceremonies leading up to 2022: for Flying Over Sunset in 2022, Jagged Little Pill in 2020, and SpongeBob SquarePants in 2018.The Almost Famous musical adaptation premiered at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 2019 to positive reviews, and the cast from that run is also leading the premiere of Almost Famous in New York.Almost Famous tickets will be available on New York Theatre Guide soon.
