Karen Akers returns to the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel with her new show When A Lady Loves for an exclusive seven-week engagement, from the 12 Apr - 28 May 2005
When A Lady Loves directed by Richard Niles, features musical director Don Rebic on piano and Chip Jackson on bass, and explores the timeless themes of love, passion and desire.
This new show features standards by such noted composers as Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Cy Coleman, Ira and George Gershwin, Jerry Herman, Cole Porter, Charles Strouse and Jule Styne. Song titles include 'They Can't Take That Away From Me,' 'I Get Along Without You Very Well,' 'The Laziest Gal in Town,' 'As Long As He Needs Me,' 'Just In Time,' and 'Stormy Weather.'
Karen Akers was recently honored at the 2005 NY Nightlife Awards as 'Outstanding Female Cabaret Vocalist in a Major Engagement' for her critically acclaimed show 'Time After Time,' which premiered at the Oak Room last year.
Ms. Akers has appeared in many venues worldwide such as Carnegie Hall, New York's premier nightspots (Caf� Carlyle, Le Jazz Au Bar, Rainbow & Stars) and the 'Hollywood Bowl', where she performed for 18,000 people with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra under the direction of John Mauceri. Internationally she has performed in concert in the south of France, in Russia, at London's Pizza-on-the-Park and will appear next year at Barcelona's Opera House.
Karen Akers appeared at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway as one of the original stars of the Tony Award-winning musical 'Grand Hotel' directed by Tommy Tune and made her debut on the Great White Way in the original production of 'Nine' (also directed by Mr. Tune) for which she won a Theatre World Award, as well as a Tony Award nomination.
Ms. Akers's current CD 'If We Only Have Love' (DRG Records), released in 2004, is a collection of theatre songs. Previous recordings include: 'Feels Like Home' (DRG Records); #Karen Akers Live From Rainbow & Stars' (DRG Records), 'Under Paris Skies' (Cabaret Records).
