The played opened to mostly excellent notices. New York Times said the peoduction was "nothing short of glorious, Star-Ledger wrote "Without exception, Hynes' sure-footed ensemble sounds all the right notes of humor and sorrow found in Friel's touching play," The USA Today printed "absorbing, heartbreaking revival," Variety praised the ensemble saying " Fully inhabiting their characters with unfussy naturalness, the cast has no weak link," and New York Theatre Guide said "You (will) think about it whenever you think of high-quality theater."
Translations is set in Donegal in 1833, and tells the story of a small community on the brink of irrevocable change. Most of the action takes place in the home of learned but doddery Hedge School master Hugh ODonnell, where, in accordance with British law, Catholic pupils are taught classics and mathematics.
Directed by Garry Hynes, Translations stars Niall Buggy, David Costabile, Alan Cox, Dermot Crowley, Jeremy Bobb, Morgan Hallett, Geraldine Hughes, Susan Lynch, Graeme Malcolm, and Chandler Williams.
Michael FitzGerald was dismissed from the run recently for handling another actor on stage with unnecesarry "harsh physical contact". He was replaced by his understudy Jeremy Bobb.
Set and costumes design by Francis OConnor, with lighting by Davy Cunningham and sound by John Leonard.
