Tony Awards 2018... And the Nominees are...
Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants lead the 2018 Tony nominations with 12 nods each.
This morning the New York Theatre Guide attended the nominations announcement for The 72nd Annual Tony Awards, co-hosted by "Smash" alumni Leslie Odom, Jr. (Tony Award-winning star of Hamilton) and Katharine McPhee (currently making her Broadway debut in Waitress) at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
Leading the pack this year with an impressive total of 12 nominations each are the Broadway premieres of Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants, The most-nominated plays this season are the Broadway revival of Angels in America with 11 nominations (breaking the record as the most-nominated play ever!), closely followed by another hit London import, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child with 10 nods.
The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing also announced that 20-time Grammy Award winner Bruce Springsteen (currently making his Broadway debut in Springsteen on Broadway) and 3-time Tony Award nominee and Emmy Award winner John Leguizamo (last seen on Broadway in his self-penned solo show Latin History for Morons) will both be honored with Special Tony Awards this year.
The Regional Theatre Tony Award will be presented to off-Broadway's La MaMa at this year's ceremony and, as previously reported, multiple-time Tony Award-winning composer and producer Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and two-time Tony Award-winning actress Chita Rivera will be honored with special Tony Awards for "Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre". Executive Vice President of the Nederlander Organization Nick Scanalios will be honored with The Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his tireless advocacy and dedication to LGBTQ families nationwide, whilst the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre go to New York Times photographer Sara Krulwich, costume beader Bessie Nelson and Broadway dry cleaning service Ernest Winzer Cleaners.
These recipients and all of the winners from the following competitive categories will be announced at The 72nd Annual Tony Awards, co-hosted by Broadway alumni and multi-platinum recording artists Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS, continuing the long-standing partnership first established in 1978.
