'The Man Who Laughs' - a silent stage adatation of Victor Hugo's novel, at the Red Room

Horse Trade Theater Group presents The Man Who Laughs, the Stolen Chair's Theatre Company's collective created adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel, staged as a live silent film, comedy with stylized movement, original musical accompaniment, and projected intertitles.

The silent horrific, comedic, and romantic melodrama plays at The Red Room from the 31 Oct - 12 Nov 2005.

In The Man Who Laughs a band of gypsies kidnaps a gentle young boy and surgically disfigures his face into a permanent smile. He finds his way into the wagon of a lovably misanthropic itinerant performer who adopts him and a blind foundling girl he has discovered in his travels. As the children age, they fall in love and join their father on stage, gaining fame and fortune in their roles as clown and ingnue. They live happily together, but when their performances command the attention of a debauched Duchess, her lust for the deformed clown threatens to tear the family apart.

The cast for The Man Who Laughs, directed by Jon Stancat, features: Annie McGovern (Fran), John Kaisner (Jerry / John Glenn), Jon Campbell, Megan Ofsowitz, Cameron Oro, Alexia Vernon, Dennis Wit, and Jennifer Wren.

The Man Who Laughs features live original music composed and performed by Emily Otto, with set and lighting design by David Bengali and costumes by May Elbaz.
