The Lieutenant of Inishmore to close 3 Sep 2006

Martin McDonaghs The Lieutenant of Inishmore will close on 3 Sep 2006. When the comedy closes it will have played 16 previews and 142 regular performances at the Lyceum Theatre.

The Lieutenant of Inishmore opened at the Lyceum on 3 May 2006, following previews from 19 Apr 2006. Prior to Broadway, the comedy played a sold-out limited run Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company (8 Feb 9 Apr 2006) of 23 previews and 48 regular performances.

The Lieutenant of Inishmore: Set in 1993 in County Galway on the rocky island of Inishmore, off the coast of Ireland. Padraic is a terrorist with no feeling for those he kills, yet has an obsessive attachment to Thomas, his beloved cat. But someone has murdered poor wee Thomas. Was it an accident or an execution? Either way, the death must be concealed before 'Mad Padraic' returns from a stint of torture and bombing. Otherwise the recriminations will be horrifying.

Academy Award winner Martin McDonaghs The Lieutenant of Inishmore, directed by Wilson Milam, received 5 Tony Award nominations, including Best Play and Best Director of a Play, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and a Village Voice Obie Award. Additionally, David Wilmot won a Theatre World Award and the Lucille Lortel Award for his performance as Padraic. The London production of The Lieutenant of Inishmore won the Olivier Award and received an Evening Standard nomination.

The show received excellent notices, The New York Times called it The funniest show in town, and a guaranteed adrenaline booster. See it." The Wall Street Journal wrote "Play going doesn't get any better than this." The Daily News said "If Monty Python had ever tackled the issue of Irish terrorism, they might have created something as wild, as brilliant and as weirdly exhilarating as this. The Associated Press printed "Fans of Tarantino will feel right at home. Blisteringly funny."

The cast of The Lieutenant of Inishmore features David Wilson Barnes as Brendan, Jordan Bridges as James, Andrew Connolly as Christy, Christopher Denham as Padraic, Dashiell Eaves as Joey, Peter Gerety as Donny, Jerzy Gwiazdowski as Davey and Alison Pill as Mairead.

Christopher Denham assumed the role of mad self-proclaimed terrorist Padraic on the 22 Aug 2006, and Jordan Bridges (James) and Jerzy Gwiazdowski (Davey) both made their Broadway debuts in the show on the same date.

The comedy has been struggling to draw in the crowds, the theatre only played to 53% capacity last week and 52% the week before.

The Lieutenant of Inishmore is presented on Broadway by Randall L. Wreghitt, Dede Harris, Atlantic Theater Company (Neil Pepe, Artistic Director, Andrew D. Hamingson, Managing Director), David Lehrer, Harriet Newman Leve & Ron Nicynski, the Zavelson Meyrelles Greiner Group, Mort Swinsky & Redfern Goldman Productions and Ruth Hendel.
