Atlantic Theater Company has set the full cast for [*The Far Country*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26789-the-far-country-tickets), a world-premiere play by Lloyd Suh. Performances run at the [Linda Gross Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/linda-gross-theater) from November 15 to January 1, with opening night on December 5.

The cast includes Shannon Tyo, who starred in Suh's last Off-Broadway play, *The Chinese Lady*, alongside Ben Chase, Jinn S. Kim, Whit K. Lee , Christopher Liam Moore, Amy Kim Waschke, and Eric Yang.

The creative team has also been set, with scenic design by Clint Ramos; costume design by Junghyun Georgia Lee; lighting design by Jiyoun Chang; sound design by Fan Zhang; and wig, hair, and makeup design by Tommy Kurzman.

*The Far Country* is set just after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, when a family from Taishan, China defies the law and makes a treacherous journey to California.

Lloyd Suh brings his newest play,&nbsp;The Far Country, off Broadway. Less than a year after Lloyd Suh's last New York play, *The Chinese Lady*, ran to acclaim, he returns off Broadway with the world premiere of *The Far Country*. Get *The Far Country* tickets on TodayTix.

*The Far Country* is a play set just after the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed, banning all Chinese immigration into the U.S. The show follows one fictional family who, like many real-life ones, dared to make the journey to America anyway in search of a better life. They travel from Taishan, a rural region of China, to California, braving danger at every turn.

Suh's *The Chinese Lady* was one of the most produced plays nationally in the 2021-22 theatre season. One of those productions was at The Public Theater this past spring, which received critical acclaim and multiple Off-Broadway awards nominations. Prior to *The Chinese Lady* and *The Far Country* off Broadway, Suh had two previous plays in New York: *The Wong Kids in The Secret of the Space Chupacabra Go!* and *Jesus in India*.

Eric Ting directs *The Far Country* in New York. He is an Obie Award winner for directing Jackie Sibblies Drury's *We Are Proud to Present...* in 2013. He also directed *The World of Extreme Happiness* in 2015 for Manhattan Theatre Club.

## What to Watch For

- Themes of journeying and Chinese Americans recur in Suh's plays. *The Chinese Lady* was about the first Chinese woman to come to America in the 1800s.
- Shannon Tyo, who starred in *The Chinese Lady* off Broadway, also appears in *The Far Country* off Broadway.
- Suh also has another play, *Exclusion*, that deals with the Chinese Exclusion Act specifically. That show follows Chinese migrants detained on Angel Island, off the California coast.
- Restrictions on Chinese immigration to the U.S. were in place for 70 years, from 1882 to 1952.
- Director Eric Ting previously directed another of Suh's shows: *Bina's Six Apples*, a play for children, in Atlanta.

As you settle in at Lloyd Suh’s [*The Far Country*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26789-the-far-country-tickets), you’ll see a figure seated on stage. Facing away from the audience and still as a statue, he’s been perched there since the audience was allowed in. He sits. And sits. And sits.

This staging suggests detention and waiting figure prominently in this intriguing yet sometimes elusive drama about people from Taishan, China, whose lives intertwine to form a family. 

In 1909 San Francisco, stone-faced officials grill Gee (Jinn S. Kim, the pre-show sitter). They’re questioning his status as a native-born American. Gregarious and a bit goofy, Gee must convince them of his citizenship to briefly return to Taishan to visit his wife. He says they wed in 1893 and have three kids. He hopes to bring his son back to California to work with him at his laundry. 

That won’t be easy. In the spring of 1882, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which banned Chinese people from coming to America. Gee’s interview ends and the scene shifts forward in time to Taishan. Gee’s demeanor has done a 180-degree turn. No longer meek and mild, he’s calculating and in control. Was everything he told officials a lie? Seems so.

He’s making a deal with no-nonsense Low (Amy Kim Waschke) in order to bring her teenage son, Moon Gyet, (Eric Yang) to San Francisco as his own son. Defying the law carries high risk and a steep price. That includes Moon Gyet giving up his name and identity.

The scene shifts to the Angel Island Detention Center in San Francisco Bay, where Moon Gyet, who now goes by Gee Lip Lun, is 63 days into what ends up being a 17-month stay. Interrogators question him relentlessly, looking for a tiny inconsistency that will get him shipped back to China. 

Compliant and self-contained, the teen responds to each query. An inspector concludes that detainees answer every question because “they are always lying.” 

The scene flashes forward once more to Taishan, where Moon Gyet has a wrenching reunion with Low. He’s there, he tells her, to “sell my name” to someone who’ll pay to accompany him to San Francisco. He needs money to pay off Gee, who helped pull strings enabling him to stay in the U.S. 

Yuen (Shannon Tyo), pragmatic but optimistic, agrees to come to America and be his wife and bear his children. Despite discrimination, detainments, and deceptions, an unlikely but true family emerges.

One of Suh’s strengths is his ability to mix realism and poetic elements. He uses that here as he shines a light on a dark slice of American history and builds a play around it. The timeline could be clearer, along with an indication of why these Chinese men and women risked so much to be in the U.S. They faced so many hardships there.

In this [Atlantic Theater Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/linda-gross-theater) presentation, director Eric Ting guides a uniformly excellent cast. Tyo, seen previously in Suh's [*The Chinese Lady*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/the-chinese-lady-off-broadway-review), about a different fraught journey from Asia to America, arrives well into the play and shifts the story into high gear.

There’s fine work by the design team, including Clint Ramos, whose spare but striking set reveals some surprise elements the director employs. So why were actors suddenly standing up to their ankles in water? I have no idea, and that’s no lie.

Atlantic Theater Company’s main venue is the Linda Gross Theater. The venue is a 199-seat theatre housed within the Parish House for St. Peter’s Church in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. 

The building was constructed in 1871 and has a storied history as a space for amateur performances. It also housed art exhibitions, community classes and even functioned as a practice court for the historic New York Knickerbockers baseball team. 

Atlantic permanently moved into the venue in 1991. In 2012, the company completed an $8.6 million interior renovation to modernize the space. The three-year project received $2.4 million in city funding, with the rest being supplied by Atlantic’s Board of Directors and individual and foundation donors.
