The Apple Tree plays final performance on Broadway

The Roundabout's revival of The Apple Tree, with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, book by Bock and Harnick with additional book material by Jerome Coopersmith and directed by Gary Griffin, will play its last performance on Broadway today (11 Mar 2007).

The musical opened at Studio 54 on 14 Dec 2006, following previews from 29 Nov 2006. When the production closes it will played 18 previews and 99 regular performances.

The musical opened to mixed notices though Kristin Chenoweth's performance was praised by all the critics. New York Times said Chenoweth is a "blindingly radiant package, New York Daily News wrote that the musical is "pleasant, but it plods" but Chenoweth is a "musical pint-sized powerhouse, the ideal leading lady for a show built for a knockout comic diva." The Record printed "The petite actress (Chenoweth) is pretty much the only reason to see the slight musical," and New York Theatre Guide said "Good fun though insubstantial, but Chenoweth makes it delicious."

The Apple Tree is three one-act musicals about men, women and a little thing called temptation. The musical is based on The Diary of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain; The Lady or the Tiger? by Frank R. Stockton; and Passionella by Jules Feiffer, with additional book material by Jerome Coopersmith.

Directed by Gary Griffin, The Apple Tree stars Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth (Eve, Princess Barbara, Passionella), Brian dArcy James (Adam, Sanjar, Flip) and Marc Kudisch (Snake) with Walter Charles (King Arik, Employer, Producer).

The company of The Apple Tree also features Meggie Nicole Cansler, Julie Connors, Sarah Jane Everman, Jennifer Taylor Farrell, Justin Keyes, Lorin Lataro, Mike McGowan, Sean Palmer, Dennis Stowe and Eric Santagata.

The musical features choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision by Rob Fisher. Set design will be by John Lee Beatty, with costumes by Jess Goldstein, lighting by Donald Holder and sound by Dan Moses Schreier.
