Sweet Songs of the Soul tells the story of this young, black, abandoned girl, who makes it through the High School of Performing Arts, then a music education at Montclair State College to a role on Broadway in Hair. She then is picked by Ossie Davis for a starring role in Purlie where she wins a Tony award. The musical story follows through with her own TV shows, many films, recordings - pop and gospel hits- and her later ups and downs, a failing career and its rebirth.
The show is directed by Rhonda Passion, with set design and lighting by Antoinette Tynes, sound design by Sean O'Halloran and is produced by Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre
