Spamalot celebrates its 3rd anniversary on Broadway
Monty Python'S Spamalot, winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, celebrates its third anniversary on Broadway on 18 Mar 2008.
Spamalot opened at New York's Shubert Theatre on 17 Mar 2005, following previews from 14 Feb. The show is currently booking to 14 Sep 2008.
Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail, Spamalot features a chorus line of dancing divas and knights, flatulent Frenchmen, a killer rabbit and one legless knight.
The musical opened to excellent reviews: "Bloody fantastic. Gorgeously silly. Spamalot, a new musical ripped-off from the internationally famous comedy teams most popular motion picture, 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', features a book by Eric Idle, based on the screenplay of 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' by Monty Python creators Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, with an entirely new score featuring music and lyrics by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, along with three songs from the 1975 film.
Directed by Mike Nichols and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, the musical currently features Jonathan Hadary (King Arthur), Hannah Waddingham (The Lady of the Lake), Christopher Sieber (Sir Dennis), Rick Holmes (Sir Lancelot), David Hibbard (Patsy), Clay Aiken (Sir Robin/Guard/Brother Maynard), Tom Deckman (Historian/Prince Herbert) and Brad Oscar (Sir Bedevere).
In addition, to the Tony Award for Best Musical, Spamalot received the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Mike Nichols) and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Sara Ramirez).
The set and costume design for Spamalot is by Tony Award-winner Tim Hatley, with lighting design by Hugh Vanstone and sound design by ACME Sound Partners.
In addition to New York, there is a national touring production of the musical, a London production opened last fall at London's Palace Theatre, a Las Vegas production opened at Wynn Las Vegas this spring starring John O'Hurley as King Arthur, and a production is also running at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne, Australia.
