A shimmering play by one of America's most-produced playwrights, *Little Bear Ridge Road* asks is connection more trouble than it’s worth? 

As an aging aunt and gay nephew's stilted relationship begins anew, the two reluctant relatives — separated by age, beliefs, and experience — ​start to understand the joys and downfalls of letting someone else into your own story, even if only for a fleeting moment.

The play won raves during its Chicago debut at Steppenwolf. A ★★★★ hit, The Chicago Tribune wrote, "I can’t overstate how good it is to see Laurie Metcalf, a consummate Chicago-style actor, back in the city that made her famous because it fell in love with her honesty."

Laura Elizabeth Metcalf was born on&nbsp;June 16, 1955 in Carbondale, Illinois. She is known for her Tony Award-winning performance as Nora in&nbsp;A Doll's House, Part 2, her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Marion McPherson&nbsp;in Ladybird,&nbsp;and her three-time Emmy Award-winning TV role as&nbsp;Jackie Harris on Roseanne.&nbsp;

Metcalf was raised in Edwardsville, Illinois, and eventually majored in theatre at Illinois State University. She graduated in 1976 with a bachelor of arts and began her acting career with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. She made her Off-Broadway debut in 1984 in a Steppenwolf production of&nbsp;Balm in Gilead, receiving both a Theatre World Award and an Obie Award. After relocating to New York City,&nbsp;Metcalf launched what would become a highly-celebrated stage career. During the 1980s, she starred as Beth in the 1986 Lincoln Center Theater production of&nbsp;Bodies, Rest and Motion&nbsp;and as Rita in the Westside Theatre's 1987 production of Willy Russell's&nbsp;Educating Rita.

On screen, Metcalf's first major film credit came in 1985, when she played Leslie Glass in Desperately Seeking Susan. Her career took off in 1988&nbsp;after she was cast as Jackie Harris on the long-running ABC sitcom Roseanne. She appeared in a total of 221 episodes between 1988 and 1997, winning three Emmy Awards (from 1992 to 1994), and earning a further Emmy Award nomination (1995) and two Golden Globe nominations (1993 and 1995). Her other major TV credits over the course of her career include Emmy-nominated appearances in 3rd Rock from the Sun,&nbsp;Monk,&nbsp;Desperate Housewives,&nbsp;The Big Bang Theory,&nbsp;Horace and Peter,&nbsp;and as&nbsp;Dr. Jenna James on Getting On. She has also starred in a host of films over the years, including Uncle Buck&nbsp;(1989), Internal Affairs&nbsp;(1990), Pacific Heights&nbsp;(1990), JFK&nbsp;(1991), A Dangerous Woman&nbsp;(1993), Leaving Las Vegas&nbsp;(1995), Dear God&nbsp;(1996),&nbsp;Scream 2&nbsp;(1997), and Lady Bird&nbsp;(2017), for which she was nominated for&nbsp;Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards.&nbsp;She has also worked in animation, voicing the roles of&nbsp;Sarah Hawkins in Disney's Treasure Planet&nbsp;(2002),&nbsp;Lucille Krunklehorn in Disney's Meet the Robinsons&nbsp;(2007), and Mrs. Davis in Pixar's&nbsp;Toy Story&nbsp;franchise.

On Broadway, after previously&nbsp;making&nbsp;her debut in the short-lived 1995 production of&nbsp;My Thing of Love, Metcalf became a regular on the scene from late 2007. She appeared in a string of roles including three Tony Award-nominated performances in&nbsp;November&nbsp;(2008),&nbsp;The Other Place&nbsp;(2013), and the stage adaptation of Stephen King's&nbsp;Misery (2016), opposite Bruce Willis. She also starred as&nbsp;Kate Jerome in the 2009 Broadway revival of&nbsp;Brighton Beach Memoirs and appeared off Broadway in The New Group's 2010 production of&nbsp;A Lie of the Mind at Theatre Row, the 2011 MCC Theater production of&nbsp;The Other Place&nbsp;(winning both a Lucille Lortel Award and an Obie Award), and the 2013 Lincoln Center Theater production of&nbsp;Domesticated. Metcalf has also appeared on the London stage in the National Theatre's 2001 revival of Arthur Miller's&nbsp;All My Sons&nbsp;and as Mary Tyrone in the 2012 West End revival of Eugene O'Neill's&nbsp;Long Day's Journey Into Night.

In 2017, Metcalf won her first Tony Award for her acclaimed performance as Nora Helmer in Lucas Hnath's&nbsp;A Doll's House, Part 2, portraying the iconic Ibsen character from&nbsp;March 30 through&nbsp;July 23, 2017. She returned&nbsp;to Broadway to star alongside Glenda Jackson and Alison Pill in Edward Albee's&nbsp;Three Tall Women&nbsp;from February 27 through to June 24, 2018, and took home her second consecutive Tony Award for her efforts at the 2018 ceremony. She then took on the&nbsp;role of Hillary Clinton in Lucas Hnath's new play&nbsp;Hillary and Clinton&nbsp;at Broadway's <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/golden-theatre">Golden Theatre</a>, earning yet another Tony Award nomination. The play began performances on&nbsp;March 16 and ran&nbsp;through June&nbsp;23, 2019.

Her next Broadway venture —&nbsp;marking her record-breaking fifth consecutive season on Broadway —&nbsp;was in the iconic role of Martha in a revival of Edward Albee's&nbsp;Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf?&nbsp;at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/booth-theatre">Booth Theatre</a>, which began performances on March 3, 2020. However, the production was forced to close down on March 11 after just nine&nbsp;previews&nbsp;due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2023, she stars in Levi Holloway's horror play *Grey House* on Broadway.

The Booth Theatre, named in honor of the legendary 19th-century actor Edwin Booth, is a historical theater venue in New York City, specifically located in the heart of the theatre district on Broadway. It was first opened on October 16, 1913. This venue loves to exhibit plays and has been home to a string of widely acclaimed productions since its establishment. It is known for its intimate setting, having only 766 seats distributed between the orchestra and mezzanine levels. The interior is beautifully ornamented, showcasing Italian Renaissance detailing and a warm, old-world atmosphere. The Booth Theatre is currently owned by the Shubert Organization. The Booth Theatre opened on October 16, 1913, as an adjoining venue with the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/shubert-theatre). The building was designed by Henry B. Herts, and the first production there was Arnold Bennett's play *The Great Adventure*.

Named after the actor Edwin Booth, brother to the infamous John Wilkes Booth, the venue was actually the second New York theatre to bear his name. The first was built in 1869 on 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue, but it was demolished in 1965.

The facade and parts of the current Booth's interior have been designated New York City landmarks.

## How to get to the Booth Theatre on Broadway

The Booth Theatre is located on 45th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. It is closest to the 42nd Street stations on the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, or S lines. The theatre is also accessible by bus, with the closest stops being 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS lines.

Plenty of buses serve 45th street, where the theatre is located. Commute by car is also feasible, with ample parking facilities in and around Times Square. Do remember, New York streets get busy; leaving ample time for travel is always a good idea.

One thing’s for sure about the first show of the 2023-24 Broadway season: [*Grey House*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27836-grey-house-tickets) has curb appeal. Actress [Laurie Metcalf](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/laurie-metcalf) and director Joe Mantello each lend Tony Award-winning luster to the listing at the [Lyceum Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lyceum-theatre-ny). Moreover, haunted-house tales are rare commodities on stage, so that also counts as a clear credit.

From there, things turn murkier with Chicago-based playwright Levi Holloway’s story set in a remote cabin that moans, groans, and features the freakiest refrigerator since a demon moved into one in *Ghostbusters*. The unspoken come-on of *Grey House* is: Be afraid, be very afraid. Yes, please!

Although the 110-minute production oozes mystery and a ghostly vibe, it doesn’t deliver intense shivers. It’s too vague to stir psychological chills or, for that matter, good old-fashioned goosebumps. It’s as much a head-scratcher as it is a hair-raiser.

Your ultimate satisfaction level will be in proportion to your need for a mystery to be spelled out – and, frankly, it doesn’t have to be to work. Do we ever really know why the beaked beasts attacked in *The Birds*? Just saying.

In 1977, Max (Tatiana Maslany) and her husband Henry (Paul Sparks) seek refuge at a house in the woods after a car wreck leaves him with a broken ankle. It slowly emerges that no one really winds up at this address by accident. It’s by destiny. Suffice it to say the house is a magnet for men with pasts, women with maternal instincts, and lost girls.

“I’ve seen this movie,” Henry tells Max as he hobbles around the house where clutter rules and the phone cord is severed. “We don’t make it.” Is his quip black humor? Foreshadowing? Time tells all as Henry falls deeper under the spell of the strange girls in residence.

They’re an odd-lot pack. They look almost feral but sing and harmonize like mournful angels. They busy themselves adding long red strands to a weird-looking afghan or tapestry. What are they up to? Meat macrame? You won’t find this craft project on Etsy.

Icy Marlow (Sophia Anne Caruso) is the apparent queen bee, while Bernie (Millicent Simmonds), who’s Deaf, makes Henry’s nose bleed with a *Carrie*-like gesture. Squirrel (Colby Kipnes) creeps in and out of the sinister-looking basement, while A1656 (Alyssa Emily Marvin) — yes, that’s a name — recalls seeing her brother shot dead.

There’s also a periodically blindfolded boy (Eamon Patrick O’Connell) and a nightmarish Ancient (Cyndi Coyne) adding to the weirdness. Raleigh (Metcalf, in blustery *Roseanne* mode) watches over them all, describing her brood as “willful creatures” who are “always hungry.”

And exactly how are they satiated? That’s one burning question. Another is whether Max and Henry will ever get out of this place situated in a *Twilight Zone* — er, the mountains. 

That becomes more urgent as Marlow and company ply Henry with moonshine, also known as “the nectar of dead men,” from the fridge. It's stored in mason jars curiously labeled with names and dates — for instance, Douglas, 1971. Henry greedily guzzles the stuff and reveals disturbing truths about himself. The plot thickens.

Mantello has assembled a fine ensemble. His atmospheric production packs jump scares that do their job, plus a gross-out bit of DIY surgery. Scott Pask’s set screams creepy, Natasha Katz’s lighting casts dark shadows, and Tom Gibbons’s sound design doubles as a residential respiratory system that makes the house come alive. 

One wishes the series of scenes built to a deeper, more full-scale sense of dread. In terms of fright nights, *Grey House* is entertaining, albeit middle of the road.

'Grey House' review — Laurie Metcalf-led horror play falls short of fully chilling

The Lyceum Theatre is one of Broadway's longest running, and most storied venues. It is the oldest continually operating theatre in New York City, delivering its rich tradition and history since opening its doors in 1903. Uniquely, it is one of the few theatres that was built and still operates as a legitimate theatre. The stunning Beaux-Arts style facade and grandiose interior, designed by architects Herts & Tallant, are part of what make a night at Lyceum truly unforgettable one. The theatre has been home to a vast array of productions, from plays to musicals, and has played a key role in shaping the Broadway landscape. Some of the notable performances include 'The Voice Of The Turtle', 'Othello', 'Born Yesterday', and more recently, the Tony award-winning 'The Play That Goes Wrong'.

 The Lyceum Theatre is prominently situated at 149 W 45th Street, almost in the very heart of Manhattan. It is well-serviced by public transport with several subway stations nearby - Times Square-42nd St (N,Q,R,S,1,2,3,7), 42nd St-Bryant Park (B,D,F,M), and 47th-50th streets-Rockefeller Center (B,D,F,M). Taxis and ride-share services like Uber are also readily available. Given its central location, it is also easily reachable by foot if you're already downtown.
