See Laurie Metcalf star in this quiet and profound new drama about family, grief, and the strange connections that unite relatives during it. The Academy Award nominee, known for roles in Lady Bird and A Doll's House, Part II (Tony Award), returns to Broadway in this hit Samuel D. Hunter play that earned rave reviews in Chicago.
In Little Bear Ridge Road on Broadway, an aunt and her gay nephew come together in the wake of the death of a troubling father figure. The two relatives, the last in the family tree, don't have much in common: while both have roots in rural Idaho, where Hunter sets many of his plays, the two struggle to connect.
However, what Hunter does so well is show the ways in which people try, and sometimes fail, to come together. Weaving a subtle and moving story about loss and love, Hunter, the acclaimed writer of The Whale and Lewiston/Clarkston, creates a tailor-made role for Metcalf. Tony Award winner Joe Mantello directs.
The Chicago Tribune gave the play five stars, writing "I can’t overstate how good it is to see Laurie Metcalf, a consummate Chicago-style actor, back in the city that made her famous because it fell in love with her honesty."
Metcalf is a member of Steppenwolf, one of Chicago's largest theatres. The play originated there and was a smash. In another four-star review, The Chicago Sun-Times said, "This is a deeply beautiful piece of writing... brought to brilliant life, and eventually explosive drama, by Laurie Metcalf and Micah Stock under the precise, elegant direction of Joe Mantello."
Now, the play comes to the Booth Theatre: don't miss Little Bear Ridge Road in New York.
