Second Stage Theatre's 2007 - 08 Season will present two comedies, a musical and an Albee play


Second Stage Theatre's 2007 - 2008 season will commence on 19 Oct 2007 with the New York premiere of Edward Albee's Peter and Jerry, featuring Bill Pullman, who appeared on Broadway in Albee's 'The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?' (2002), Johanna Day and Dallas Roberts. The production will be directed by Pam MacKinnon.

The season will also include Next to Normal, a new musical with score by Tom Kitt, book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, directed by Michael Greif (Grey Gardens, Rent), as well as the world premiere of Farragut North, a dark comedy set in the world of presidential politics from new playwright Beau Willimon.

Second Stage's fourth production will be a newstaging of Richard Nelson's 1989 comedy Some Americans Abroad, directed by Gordon Edelstein.

Peter and Jerry

Synopsis: Edward Albee delves deeper into his first play 'The Zoo Story' (1958) by adding a first-act, Homelife, leading to Peter's fateful meeting with Jerry on a park bench in Central Park.

(Playwright) Edward Albee's has won many awards for his work: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962 Tony Award), A Delicate Balance (1966 Pulitzer Prize; 1996 Tony Award), Seascape (1974 Pulitzer Prize), Three Tall Women (1991 Pulitzer Prize), The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2002 Tony Award).

(Director) MacKinnon directed the world premiere of Peter and Jerry at the Hartford Stage.

Bill Pullman made his Broadway debut as Martin in Albee's The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? (2002).

Johanna Day appeared in the world premiere of Edward Albee's Peter and Jerry at Hartford Stage. She was nominated for a 2001 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her Broadway debut performance as Clair in Proof (2000).

Dallas Roberts has appeared onstage in Caryl Churchill's 'A Number' opposite Sam Shepard (NYTW 2004), the revival of Burn This (Signature Theatre 2002) opposite Edward Norton and Catherine Keener, True Love (Zipper Theatre 1991), and Nocturne (NYTW 2001), for which he received a Drama Desk nomination for Best Actor.

(Composer) Tom Kitt wrote the score for the Broadway msical High Fidelity (2006).

(Director) Michael Greif is currently represented on Broadway by Grey Gardens and Rent. He also directed the Broadway musical Never Gonna Dance (2003).


Farragut North (World premiere)

Synopsis: Hot-shot press secretary Stephen Myers is at the top of his game with his candidate poised to take the presidential nomination. As primaries commence in Iowa, Stephen's world unravels when colleagues become competition, lovers become liabilities and one election becomes his last hope of survival.

(Playwright) Beau Willimon worked extensively in politics, having served on the staff of several political campaigns, including Sen. Chuck Schumer's 1998 Senate race, Sen. Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate race and Gov. Howard Dean's 2004 Presidential race. His plays include: Baby Blue, War Story, Clinically Negative, I Am Ned Kelly, Nobody�s Child and Breathing Time.


Some Americans Abroad

Synopsis: A group of pretentious American college students, accompanied by their professors, embark on a literary tour of England. With a crammed itinerary and barely enough time to digest the sites, their behavior devolves from appreciative to appalling.

Some Americans Abroad played on Broadway at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in 1990, directed by Roger Michell.

(Playwright) Richard Nelson's Two Shakespearean Actors played at Broadway's Cort Theatre in 1991. He wrote the books for the musicals 'Chess' and 'James Joyce's The Dead'.

(Director) Gordon Edelstein directed the Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming (1991). Off-Broadway Edelstein has directed the Roundabout's production of Martin McDonagh's A Skull in Connemara (2001), and the American Jewish Theatre's production of Michael Henry Brown's, The Day the Bronx Died (1994).


Founded in 1979 under the leadership of Artistic Director Carole Rothman, Second Stage Theatre produces a diverse range of premieres and new interpretations of America's best contemporary theatre. The Theatre supports artists through several programs that include residencies, fellowships and commissions, and engages students and community members through education and outreach programs.

Second Stage Theatre's production of William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee recently entered its 3rd year on Broadway at Circle in the Square Theatre.
