[Scott Bakula](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/scott-bakula) will star in [*The Baker's Wife*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/44546-the-bakers-wife) off Broadway, joining the musical as Aimable Castagnet alongside the previously announced [Ariana DeBose](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/ariana-debose) as Genevieve. Performances run at [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/venues/classic-stage-company) from October 23 to December 14, with opening night on November 11.

Bakula is best known for his Golden Globe Award-winning performance on the TV show *Quantum Leap*, Emmy-nominated performance in the Liberace biopic *Behind the Candelabra*, and starring roles on shows like *NCIS: New Orleans* and *Star Trek: Enterprise*.

Bakula is also a stage veteran, having last appeared off Broadway in the musical *The Connector* in 2024. His Broadway credits include *Romance/Romance* (Tony nomination) and *Marilyn: An American Fable*, and he's appeared in various productions across the U.S. and in the U.K.

Bakula has even performed in *The Baker's Wife* before, playing Dominique in a 1980 Cincinnati production. The show, now getting its first full-scale NYC production with Classic Stage, follows a baker and his wife who arrive in a French village with fresh bread — and fresh gossip, riling the town into a frenzy of mischief, temptation, romance, and comedy.

*The Baker's Wife* is based on the film *La Femme du Boulanger* by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono. Premiering in 1976, the musical has a book by Tony Award winner Joseph Stein (*Fiddler on the Roof*) and music and lyrics by Oscar, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Stephen Schwartz ([*Wicked*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/1-wicked-musical-tickets), [*The Queen of Versailles*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/41950-the-queen-of-versailles-on-broadway)). The musical premiered in the West End in 1989 for a short run but, although establishing a dedicated cult following, has never been on Broadway. Now, it comes to New York off Broadway. Based on the 1938 French film of the same name by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, *The Baker's Wife* is set in the rustic Provence region of France, where everyone knows everything about everybody.

Such is the case in the small town where this musical is set: a baker, Aimable, arrives with his new wife, Genevieve, who quickly catches the eyes of the men in town. A beautiful young woman, Genevieve just wants a fresh start in a new town full of people who are suspicious of her, and she soon falls for the local lothario, Dominique. What follows is a comedic and honest look at how couples navigate disagreement, and how a tight-knit town confronts change.

Genevieve is a beautiful young woman looking for a fresh start in her new village, but when she arrives with the much older Aimable, she quickly catches everyone's eye and curiosity, especially Dominique's. That local heartthrob whisks her off her feet, and after she flees town with him, the village unravels: its talented baker has lost his will to cook, and neighbors will do anything to bring his legendary bread back.

A rumination on love, forgiveness, and how a couple, and community, navigate change, *The Baker's Wife* is a fan-favorite musical but one that has rarely performed in New York City. After a failed out-of-town tryout decades ago that starred Patti LuPone as the baker's wife, the musical gained a cult following. Based on the French film of the same name, the musical went on to earn an Olivier Award nomination for Best New Musical in London.

DeBose is best known for her Academy Award, BAFTA, Critics Choice, and SAG Award-winning performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg's *West Side Story* movie musical. She got her start, however, on Broadway, performing in the ensemble of [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) and starring as Disco Donna in *Summer: The Donna Summer Musical*, earning a Tony Award nomination. Additional Broadway credits include the musicals *Pippin, Motown, A Bronx Tale*, and *Bring It On*.

DeBose has also appeared in the musical TV show *Schmigadoon!*, the movie musical *The Prom*, and other films including *Love Hurts* with Ke Huy Quan. She hosted the Tony Awards in 2022, 2023, and 2024, earning Emmy nominations for Outstanding Variety Special for the latter two years.

Since making his Broadway debut in *Is there life after high school?*, Bakula played Joe DiMaggio in *Marilyn: An American Fable* and earned a Tony Award nomination for starring in *Romance/Romance*. Off Broadway, he headlined the world-premiere Jason Robert Brown musical *The Connector* in 2024 and earned a 1985 Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Ensemble Acting, alongside his cast, for *Three Guys Naked from the Waist Down*. He's appeared in numerous other theatre productions across the U.S. at venues like the Hollywood Bowl, San Diego's Old Globe, and Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C.

Bakula is best known, however, for playing Sam Beckett on *Quantum Leap*, earning three Golden Globe nominations (winning one) and four Emmy nominations, and Bob Black in the Liberace biopic *Behind the Candelabra*, earning another Emmy nomination. Additional high-profile TV roles include Dwayne Cassius "King" Pride on *NCIS: New Orleans* and Captain Jonathan Archer on *Star Trek: Enterprise*.

Founded in 1967, Classic Stage Company (also known as CSC) is located in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village close to Union Square. CSC produces revivals and reimaginings of classical plays and musicals for contemporary audiences, which often relate to current issues.

The company's first venue was a 100-seat theatre within Rutgers Presbyterian Church, and it moved to its current venue, a former carriage house, in 1973. The 199-seat theatre has a thrust stage with audiences seated on three sides of the performance space.

In January 2019, the Off-Broadway home of Classic Stage Company was renamed the Lynn F. Angelson Theater in honor of Lynn F. Angelson, a longstanding board chair.

Do you hear the papers rip? You do at [*The Connector*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/38627-the-connector-tickets), Jason Robert Brown’s newest musical at [MCC Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/mcc-theater) — and you'd never except the sound to be sublime percussion.

Director/conceiver Daisy Prince (a previous Brown collaborator) and bookwriter Jonathan Marc Sherman set the story in the late 1990s, when 20something Ethan Dodson (Ben Levi Ross) scores a writing position in the New York office of renowned magazine The Connector. Better yet, the kindly editor-in-chief Conrad O’Brien (Scott Bakula, returning to musical theatre) favors him as a mentee. However, Ethan’s deceitful stories are about to take down the publication.

These events unfold through the eyes of assistant copy editor Robin Martinez (Hannah Cruz, melodic), whose story submissions languish on O’Brien’s desk. Sherman’s book shows Robin's skill with textured language while she deals with latent sexism. Though attraction may brew between her and Ethan, she remains wary of his white male confidence and breezy upward mobility. Robin is consigned to tell Ethan's story, but her expression says, “I’m no buried lede in this musical.”

Halfway through, she delivers Ethan an indictment – “You’re no longer interesting to me” — though his nerdish amiability (while it lasts) and egoism stay magnetic to us. Pay attention to Ross’s body language: Without being derivative, he seems to channel movie actor Hayden Christensen’s portrayal of Stephen Glass, a real-life New Republic writer who bluffed fabricated stories into print, in the movie *Shattered Glass*. Just as Christensen expertly wields a puppy pout and crocodile tears, Ross arms Ethan with entitled defensiveness when confronted.

The audience might notice the cracks in Ethan’s tales more quickly. His "firsthand" journalistic anecdotes involve ensemble dancing (Karla Puno Garcia’s sprightly choreography). Márion Talán de la Rosa also gives imagined characters a strategic dash of eye-popping color, contrasting otherwise gray office attire. Scenic designer Beowulf Boritt also excellently recreates a newspaper collection: The exposed wings reveal valleys of crates and papers, perhaps representing the unseen labor of sifting through countless archives to get the facts.

Rounding out the office setting are Jessica Molaskey as the exhausted Muriel, a fact-checker harried by Ethan’s storytelling and untraceable sources. Mylinda Hull perfects the levity that is Mona Bland, a devout Connector subscriber whose good-natured nitpicks fester into an avalanche of inquiry, as her perkiness crumbles into one of shattered intellectual faith.

From a musical standpoint, actor Max Crumm (as a Scrabble champ) knocks out the song "Success" just as actor Fergie Philippe (as a hooded whistleblower) seizes his showstopper, “Wind in the Sails.” The show also boasts an intoxicating prayer number, which highlights the violinist Todd Reynolds as well as the thought-provoking link between stories and faith. In an intermission-free 105 minutes, these numbers – career gold for Brown – overcome the sleepiness in the musical’s first hour, when the Ethan/Robin dynamic almost stales.

Later stagings may yield an evolved draft, but much of *The Connector*’s premiere has credible charisma enough to compensate. When the musical sprints toward a finale where tearing paper becomes music, we’re consumed.
