Ariana DeBose to star in 'The Baker's Wife' off Broadway

The Academy Award-winning actress will lead the first full-scale New York production of Stephen Schwartz's musical at Classic Stage Company this fall.

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will star this fall in The Baker's Wife off Broadway, the first production in Classic Stage Company's 2025-26 season. Performances run at CSC from will run from October 23 to December 14, with opening night on November 11.

DeBose is known for her performances in films including Steven Spielberg's West Side Story film (Academy, BAFTA, Critics Choice, SAG Awards), The Prom, and Love Hurts, in the TV show Schmigadoon!, and in Hamilton and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical on Broadway.

In The Baker's Wife, she plays the title role of Genevieve, a woman who, alongside her husband, arrive in a quiet French village with fresh bread — and fresh gossip that turns the town upside down with mischief, temptation, romance, and comedy.

Based on the film La Femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, The Baker's Wife has a book by Tony Award winner Joseph Stein (Fiddler on the Roof) and music and lyrics by Oscar, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, The Queen of Versailles). Directed by Gordon Greenberg, CSC's is the first full-scale production of the musical in New York since its 1976 premiere, as the show's planned Broadway run at the time never materialized.

Complete casting and creative team for The Baker's Wife have yet to be announced.
