Public Theater announces full cast of Oedipus El Rey
The Public Theater has announced complete casting for the upcoming New York premiere of Oedipus El Rey, written by Luis Alfaro and directed by Chay Yew, which runs from October 3 to November 19, 2017 at the Public's Shiva Theater, with an official opening set for October 24.
The cast includes (in alphabetical order) Juan Castano (as Oedipus, Coro), Sandra Delgado (as Jocasta), Julio Monge (as Tiresias, Coro), Joel Perez (as Creon, Coro), Brian Quijada (as Coro), Reza Salazar (as Coro) and Juan Francisco Villa (as Laius, Coro).
Synopsis: "Set in South Central LA, Oedipus El Rey is a new take on the Greek tragedy. Oedipus is reimagined as a troubled Latino whose dreams of controlling his own destiny soar above the barbed wire of the prison where he's spent his life. But in a place where everyone is trapped—by desperation or fate, history or violence—no one man can change his story alone. Love, family and belief collide in this chilling, incredibly powerful new play that asks: what's fate, and what's just the system?"
The production is presented in collaboration with The Sol Project.
The Public Theater's 2017-2018 season also includes the Public Works production of As You Like It at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park from September 1 to 5, the Elevator Repair Service production of Measure For Measure from September 18 through to November 5 (with an official opening on October 10), an encore engagement of Tiny Beautiful Things, starring Nia Vardalos, from September 19 through to November 12 (with an official opening set for October 2), the New York premiere of Office Hour by Julia Cho, from October 17 through to December 3 (with an official opening on November 8), as well as the world premiere of Illyria, written and directed by Richard Nelson, the world premiere of Sarah Burgess' Kings, the New York premiere of The Low Road by Bruce Norris, the world premiere of Lynn Nottage's Mlima's Tale and finally, the New York premiere of Fire in Dreamland by Rinne Groff.
