Phoenix Theatre Ensemble 2006 - 2007 Season


Phoenix Theatre Ensemble will present 6 shows for their 3rd season. Five shows have been announced, with a sixth show still in the planning stage

The five announced shows are The Sneeze by Michel Frayn, Antigone by Jean Anouilh, The Lesson / The Painting by Eugene Ionesco, On the Verge by Eric Overmyer and Maud or The Madness by Alfred, Lord Tennyson



The Sneeze

, by Michel Frayn, adapted from plays and stories by Anton Chekhov, playing at the Ace of Clubs from 14 Oct - 14 Nov 2006.

The Sneeze contains the four one-act comic vaudevilles that first established Chekhov's reputation in the theatre, along with four adapted short stories.

The show will be directed by John Giampetro, cast to be announced.




Antigone

by Jean Anouilh, playing at the Connelly Theater from 28 Nov 2006 - 2 Jan 2007.

Adaptation of Sophocles' classic, Anouilh challenged 1940s Vichy France with an enduring story about resistance: a young girl defies a king in order to honor burial rites for her brother.

The play will be directed by Eve Adamson, cast to be announced.

Runs in repertoire with The Lesson / The Painting




The Lesson / The Painting

(Double Bill), by Eugene Ionesco, playing at the Connelly Theater from 07 Dec 2006 - 6 Jan 2007.

The Lesson: An absurdist piece about what happens when an eager pupil arrives : to meet with her professor.

The Painting: a wealthy patron and a starving artist's linguistic slapstick sends-up both the bourgeoisie and the art world.

The Lesson will be directed by Amy Wagner, The director for The Painting still to be announced, along with the cast for both plays.

On The Verge

, by Eric Overmyer, expected in March 2007

Three Victorian lady explorers take off in search of the Great Unknown and find themselves adventuring through both space and time, as they encounter the very strange inhabitants and objects of 20th Century America.

Director, Cast and Venue to be announced.




Maud or The Madness

, by Lord Alfred Tennyson, expected in May 2007

The story of a morbidly sensitive young man. In love with the eponymous Maud, but tortured by doubt, paranoia, and familial loyalty, he rages at the worlds of commerce, politics, and religion, trying to measure his own worth in an unjust society. A cynic in his joy, he becomes a madman in his despair.

Performed by Jonathan Tindle and directed by Niegel Smith. Venue to be announced.
