Old Acquaintance plays final performance on Broadway


The Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of John Van Druten's comedy, Old Acquaintance, starring Harriet Harris (Mildred Watson Drake) and Margaret Colin, plays its final performance on Broadway on 19 Aug 2007.

The comedy opened at the American Airlines Theatre on 28 Jun 2007, following previews from 1 Jun. When the comedy closes it will have played 61 regular performances and 31 previews.

The show opened to mostly poor reviews: "Mildly entertaining, maddeningly disjunctive revival." (New York Times); "This acquaintance seems even more odd than old." (Bloomberg); "An evening of feather-light fun." (The Record)."

Directed by Michael Wilson, Old Acquaintance also featured Stephen Bogardus (Preston Drake), Diane Davis (Dierdre Drake), Corey Stoll (Rudd Kendall), Cynthia Darlow (Susan) and Gordana Rashovich (Sabrina).

In Old Acquaintance two childhood friends who have grown into very different adults, although they are both successful authors. The independent Katharine 'Kit' Markham is carrying on an affair with a younger man while divorc�e Mildred 'Millie' Drake refuses to loosen the apron-strings on her teenage daughter, Dierdre. When Dierdre's struggles to become more like her idol Kit have far-reaching consequences, the two women who thought they were growing apart realize that they may have much more in common than they'd like to admit.

Old Acquaintance premiered on Broadway in 1940 at the Morosco Theatre, starring Jane Cowl and Peggy Wood. The play was made into feature film, starring Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins, in 1943.

The design team featured sets by Alexander Dodge, costumes by David Woolard, lighting by Rui Rita and sound by John Gromada.
