The Sharks and the Jets go head to head in “West Side Story,” the classic 1957 musical with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. As a race war between the dueling gangs brews over turf on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Tony and Maria meet at a school dance and fall in love at first sight. Standing in the way of their budding romance, however, is that Maria is the brother of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks, while Tony stands with the Jets.
 
Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet” and adapted for the screen in 1961, the musical masterpiece receives a makeover for the 21st century. Helmed by acclaimed Belgian-born artists director Ivo van Hove (the Tony Award-winning director of 2015’s “A View From the Bridge”) and choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (celebrated for her work with the dance company Rosas), the 2020 Broadway revival will be the first major New York staging to deviate from original director Jerome Robbins’ iconic choreography.

## What to watch for
Director Ivo van Hove says the reason for changing Jerome Robbins’ choreography is to offer a “new take” aligned with the 21st century. “If you want to make a production now for today,” he told Deadline, “we need also to integrate [new] choreography.”

Though this is the first New York production featuring new choreography, the 2009 Broadway revival of “West Side Story” included Spanish translations of certain lyrics written by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Director van Hove and choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker have admired each other’s work since the 1980s, but “West Side Story” marks their first collaboration.

Lyricist Stephen Sondheim wanted “West Side Story” to be the first Broadway musical to use the F-word (in the song “Gee, Officer Krupke”), but it was changed after the song was played for producers.

The musical is also being re-envisioned for the screen, with a film adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg slated to be released on Dec. 18, 2020 — with a handful of actors appearing in both.

After mamboing into musical theater history in 1957,&nbsp;<a href="/show/west-side-story">West Side Story</a>&nbsp;has rumbled back again in a reimagined revival by Belgian director Ivo van Hove so packed with wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling video that it's like a new hybrid. Call it a Broadway vidsical.While you're at it, call this provocative yet mixed production at the <a href="/theatres/broadway-theatre">Broadway Theatre</a> wildly visceral, ultra gritty and at times frustratingly at odds with itself.This musical— created by Jerome Robbins (choreography and concept), Leonard Bernstein (music), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), and Arthur Laurents (book) —is one that virtually everyone knows, which makes it ripe for a fresh take. The plot is the same: Star-crossed, blood-spattered sweethearts Tony and Maria— based on&nbsp;Romeo &amp; Juliet&nbsp;—face love and war on New York City's mean streets. Those surroundings are meaner than ever. The Sharks and Jets punks are rougher, more violent, and, as dressed in costumes by An D'Huys, practically interchangeable. Designed by Luke Halls, the video, live and recorded, looms so large that a gang member's flaring nostrils can be seen from the nosebleeds seats, if not from space. Where to look? At the video? At the actors? It's like watching a drive-in movie indoors, with people interacting on a huge screen.As a result, intimacy, especially in the essential love story, gets lost. Fortunately, Isaac Powell and Shereen Pimentel, as Tony and Maria, are strong actors and singers and still put their own stamps on the parts. As rival gang leaders, Dharon E. Jones and Amar Ramasa, a controversial casting choice due to his involvement in a #MeToo-style scandal, bring required intensity.Van Hove (<a href="/show/network">Network</a>,&nbsp;The Damned)&nbsp;has become synonymous with video effects. It's tempting to dismiss his go-to device as having totally jumped the Sharks--and the Jets. But not quite. Video imagery turns the intricately constructed, elaborately textured "Tonight" into a thrilling multilayered highlight. If only all of the video worked so well.It doesn't. "Gee, Officer Krupke," a silly number thumbing its nose and diminishing authority in comic fashion, fights with footage highlighting police brutality. During "America," led by Anita (Yesenia Ayala), a montage of images of a tattered U.S. flag, stormy Puerto Rican beaches, and so on, distracts from the choreography, a high-octane blend of ballet and angry street moves by Anne Teresa De Keesmaeker.Even with issues, the 2020 vision of&nbsp;West Side Story&nbsp;reveals the durability of the musical, depth and beauty of the songs and the stubbornly evergreen message. Broadway Theatre - TodayTix

The Broadway Theatre is one of only five playhouses situated directly on the street named Broadway. Designed by Eugene De Rosa, the building officially opened on December 25, 1924, as B. S. Moss’s Colony, a premier film house. The building underwent a series of name changes, including to Universal's Colony Theatre, B.S. Moss' Broadway Theatre, and Earl Carroll's Broadway Theatre.

The theatre was used for stage productions and was re-christened simply as the Broadway Theatre on December 30, 1930. The Shubert Organization purchased the property in 1939 and have since completed two renovations in 1956 and 1986. The theatre houses an extremely large stage at 60 feet deep.
