New Branden Jacobs-Jenkins play 'Grass' to open off Broadway this spring

The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning writer of Purpose and Appropriate presents his latest world premiere at Park Avenue Armory starting in February.

Grass, a world-premiere play by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, will run off Broadway at Park Avenue Armory from February 19 to March 28, 2027. Opening night is February 26.

Grass follows a mother and son on a surreal road trip through the South, during which they encounter bits of American history that inform their search for meaning in the modern day.

The production has direction by Sarah Benson, set design by Mimi Lien, lighting design by Jane Cox and Stacey Derosier, sound design by Bray Poor, special effects design by Jeremy Chernick, costume design by Enver Chakartash, and wig and makeup design by Cookie Jordan. Jacobs-Jenkins, Benson, and Lien reunite for the first time since the Obie Award-winning 2014 play An Octoroon.

Jacobs-Jenkins's other best-known plays include the 2025 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Purpose, the 2024 Tony winner Appropriate, and the Pulitzer finalist Gloria, which will make its Broadway premiere with Second Stage Theater this spring.

Grass is presented by Park Avenue Armory in partnership with National Black Theatre.
