Muñoz & Lawson assume the roles of Alexander & Eliza
Javier Muñoz and Lexi Lawson will officially assume the roles of Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, respectively, tonight at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Both three-time Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tony nominee Phillipa Soo played their final performances in the roles on 9 July. Of course, Mr Muñoz previously worked as the alternate Alexander Hamilton, performing the role once a week on Broadway. The new alternate is Michael Luwoye, who will be making his Broadway debut.
As previously reported, Tony winner Leslie Odom, Jr. also played his final performance as Aaron Burr on 9 July and Producer Jeffrey Seller has announced that two-time Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon will take over the role from mid August. Until then, understudies Andrew Chappelle, Sydney James Harcourt and Austin Smith will cover the role.
Javier Muñoz also functioned as Lin-Manuel Miranda's alternate in 'In The Heights,' eventually replacing him as Usnavi from February 2009.
Lexi Lawson has previously performed in Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'In The Heights' in the first National tour, as well as the role of Mimi in 'RENT.'
Brandon Victor Dixon, who is currently starring in the Tony nominated new musical 'Shuffle Along...' at the Music Box Theatre, was nominated last season for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and was previously nominated for the same award for the original production of 'The Color Purple.' His other Broadway credits include 'Motown the Musical' and 'The Scottsboro Boys' which he also starred in in London, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.
The principal cast of Hamilton currently includes Javier Muñoz (Alexander Hamilton), Lexi Lawson (Eliza Hamilton), Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), Tony nominee Christopher Jackson (George Washington), Tony winner Daveed Diggs (Marquis De Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), Anthony Ramos (John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton), Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds) and Rory O'Malley (King George).
The Broadway production of Hamilton officially opened on 6 August 2015 to excellent reviews, following previews from 13 July, and is currently booking through to 21 May 2017.
Hamilton features a book, music, and lyrics by Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, and is inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow.
