MTC to stage US Debut of The Lion by Benjamin Scheuer
Manhattan Theatre Club will stage the US premiere of solo musical The Lion, written and performed by Benjamin Scheuer and directed by Sean Daniels, beginning previews on 10 Jun 2014 with an official opening set for 26 Jun 2014 and running until 13 July 2014, at NY City Center's Stage II.
Synopsis: 'A true story of love, loss, family loyalty, and the redemptive power of music. Following an award-winning run at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, writer/performer Benjamin Scheuer shares his coming-of-age tale. The Lion is a new solo musical from a next-generation troubadour.'
Bio:
Benjamin Scheuer is the recipient of the 2013 ASCAP Foundation Cole Porter Award for songwriting, and the 2013 Musical Theatre Network Award for Best Lyrics. The music video for his song 'The Lion' has won prizes at the Annecy Film Festival, The Crystal Palace Festival, and the British Animation Awards. Scheuer has been a writer-in-residence at the Goodspeed Theater, the Weston Playhouse in Vermont, and the Johnny Mercer Songwriting Workshop, and is the curator of the Cornelia Street Cafe Songwriter Series. He records and performs with his band Escapist Papers, whose second album The Bridge was released in 2014, and features music from The Lion.
The creative team for The Lion features scenic design by Neil Patel, costumes by Jennifer Caprio, lighting by Ben Stanton, and sound design by Leon Rothenberg.
