Let It Be to close on 01 Sep 2013
The Broadway premiere of Let It Be, a theatrical concert featuring The Beatles' greatest hits, has posted early closing notices and will play its final performance on 01 Sep 2013.
The musical opened at Broadway's St. James Theatre on 24 Jul 2013, following previews from 16 Jul 2013, and was originally scheduled to play a limited engagement through to 29 Dec 2013. The show has been struggling at the box office, and last week the theatre's house capacity was only 40%.
The musical opened on Broadway to mixed reviews: The performers are outstanding (NY Times); Your enjoyment of the experience will depend both on your affection for the music and willingness to suspend disbelief (Hollywood Reporter).
Born as a West End production to celebrate The Beatle's 50th anniversary, Let It Be uses projection technology and 3D sound to tell the story of The Beatles's meteoric rise from their humble beginnings in Liverpool's Cavern Club, through the height of Beatlemania, to their later studio masterpieces.
Let It Be features live performances of more than twenty of The Beatles' greatest hits, including "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," "Hard Day's Night," "Day Tripper," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "Strawberry Fields," "When I'm 64," "Hello Goodbye," "Get Back" and many more.
The creative and design team and casting for the Broadway premiere of Let It Be will be announced at a later date.
Let It Be had its world premiere in the fall of 2012 at London's Prince of Wales Theatre. The show marked the 50th anniversary of The Beatles performance at the Royal Variety Performance in front of Her Majesty the Queen at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
The musical opened at London's Prince of Wales Theatre on 14 Sep 2012, where it was initially scheduled to close on 19 Jan 2013. The show, which recouped its initial investment after just 18 weeks, is now playing an open-ended run at London's Savoy Theatre.
London critics said of the show: All the best songs are on offer (Londontheatre.co.uk); An exercise in faintly necrophiliac nostalgia (Guardian); After two glorious hours I left the show feeling as high as a kite (Telegraph).
