UPDATE: Gaten Matarazzo, who plays the role of Tobias, will depart Sweeney Todd on Broadway on November 5.

Depart the tale. Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford are set to play their final performances in Sweeney Todd on Broadway on January 14.

Groban stars in the title role alongside Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett. In Stephen Sondheim's musical, they respectively play a vengeful barber and his pie-making accomplice who go on a murder spree in London. Groban and Ashford both earned 2023 Tony Award nominations for their performances, and Sweeney Todd was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.

New York Theatre Guide's four-star Sweeney Todd review reads, "Stephen Sondheim’s sublime score sounds deliciously lush as played by the 26-piece orchestra, the singing is uniformly excellent, and Hugh Wheeler’s morbidly gripping story unfolds in crisp fashion."

The production at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre will continue into spring 2024 with new cast members. Exact dates and casting for the extension have yet to be announced.

The current Sweeney Todd cast, alongside Groban and Ashford, includes Gaten Matarazzo as Tobias, Daniel Yearwood as Anthony, Ruthie Ann Miles as Beggar Woman, Maria Bilbao as Johanna, Jamie Jackson as Judge Turpin, John Rapson as Beadle Bamford, Nicholas Christopher as Pirelli and the standby for Sweeney Todd, and Jeanna de Waal as the standby for Mrs. Lovett and Beggar Woman.
